The Departed

Recommended Posts

I figured I'd look to see if a thread was made and it hasn't, which is a shame because this was a great movie. I'd have to put it above "GoodFellas" and I didn't think that was possible. I'll be disappointed if someone doesn't get an Oscar out of this one.

Goodfellas definitely is not as good over the course of the second half of the movie as the first half. I preferred Mean Streets and Casino as far as Scorcese's 20th century ganster genres go. Looking forward to seeing the Departed tonight, though.

OUTSTANDING flick...saw it yesterday afternoon.

I thought DiCaprio stole the show...Jack was great in that creepy, greasy kind of way - but I think Leo one-upped him.

Man...hard not to give anything away...the RAGE that DiCaprio had was awesome...great ending too.

I agree with Mack that it's definitely better than GoodFella's - by a good bit in my book.

If you have or ever had any association with Boston...you will appreciate this movie.

Seriously guys... Goodfellas? I haven't had any interest to see the movie to this point. And is Leo good in this movie? Cause I generally can't stand him.

Yeah...it's a good flick.

And I can't generally stand Leo either. In fact, before I saw it he was the sole reason that made me question whether or not I really wanted to...but he was great - I thought.

Anyone else?

Lego-

In my book better than GoodFellas. It has more depth than GoodFellas had as it's more than about one person, plus this just pops a lot more.

I'm not usually a fan of DiCaprio either but he's balls-out in this one and I'd be disappointed if he doesn't get an Oscar.

As far as Leo goes, I was on the "I hate him" bandwagon for a long time. But then I started actually watching some movies he's in (such as Catch Me If You Can), and he usually is fantastic. Looking forward to seeing this

Leo was good in Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.... but that's it. Titanic was very hard to watch, mainly because of him.

I saw the preview for Blood Diamond and think there's a good chance that'll be unwatchable because of him.

Oh they did run a "Blood Diamond" trailer before the movie and it looked like the most unwatchable movie ever made...then came the "Rocky Balboa" trailer.

If you enjoyed The Departed, you may be interested to know that it is actually a remake of a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs released back in 2002. Infernal Affairs subsequently has a couple of sequels. You will be able to tell that The Departed is almost identical to the original Infernal Affairs, from plot to screenplay to cinematography.....

You can get it with Netflix.

I've been wanting to see those IA movies but I hear this version may have trumped the original. Either way, if there's even an argument for how good the original is I want to see it.

Edit: Damn, we need a spoilers part for it so we can actually discuss parts of the movie. At least the quotes though, any line from Wahlberg and Baldwin are gold.

This is by far the best movie i have seen this year. Decaprio is a damn good actor in this movie and its hard to say anything else without giving away a lot.

Really good movie but I don't know if its on level with Goodfellas. It also mixes in a few laughs into the nonstop action

Decaprio was amazing and would have to be robbed to not get an Oscar

I just saw it and I must say I was surprised. Everyone was talking about what an amazing movie it is, and I fully expected to be let down. It was amazing. I think it might be one of those you need to see again to fully appreciate it, but I can't remember the last time I left a movie as satisfied.

The only thing I've been disappointed by in relation to the movie is how this site has a minute fraction of the good lines.

The only other movie on the horizon that I'm amped to see now is Hot Fuzz, from the makers of Shaun of the Dead. I have a feeling there may be about 2 people on this board that liked that movie though.

I loved Shaun of the Dead.

same here... it pays homeage to my favorite zombie flicks...

Anyways... being a life long native of Boston, Massachusetts... I've been trying to get to see The Departed... but I can't do it when the accents get extremely over the top... I really do try people, to not speak with a heavy New England accent. I've also heard the really crowed theatres in the area get their own "Boston commentary" like "Hey! I've been there!!" yeah, who hasn't?! I don't want stuff like that to ruin my viewing experience. So I'll give it a few more weeks

Good Will Hunting left me in the theater saying "Oh c'mon, it wasn't that bad!"

I thought it was great, I think di caprio will get an oscar (which he should have got for basketball diaries or Gilbert grape, the movies he made before he started sucking).

I love Alec Baldwins character in it, he has great comedic delivery.

Great show all round.

However the best line for any Irish Mob type has to come from "Death to Smoochy"

"Lets pray and get shit faced"

Speaking of good movies featuring actors who we, in the past, hadn't liked much, if at all, I have to throw 'Lucky Number Slevin' out there. Outside of 'Blackhawk Down,' I can't say that I have been impressed by anything featuring Josh Hartnett. 'Lucky Number Slevin,' though, was one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. I would definitely recommend it.
