Storm

Bandy, anyone?

Evil, evil sport. Far too much work to be fun unless you like skating until your legs are entirely rubber.

Actually its kind of cool but I'll stick to hockey. I'm much too slow to be any good trying to skate on a soccer rink sized ice surface.

There isn't enough coverage in the video for me to completely make fun of it. Its like the pro version of broom-ball.

..except for the guy who deked the goaly (who was wearing no pads) and scored off the backhand (into the 15 foot wide net) and celebrated like it was a lifetime accomplishment. I should sell my sherwood featherlite that just broke halfway up the shaft as a "pro stock bandy" stick lol.

On a technical note...

I don't know how to post an image along with my reply.... in any case I noticed on some Getty Images that they cut the tendon guards off.

I've also seen images with vapors and ccm skates with cobra holders.

edit...The goalie has no stick ...

Bandys a pretty cool sport we went to Finland last year and some friends introduced us to it.

Metro Bandy skates ussually come with no tendon guard although not all players use Bandy skates.

I'm guessing that they get them custom from companies or do they chop them off themselves and put a little fabric on top?

Looks like a supersized, odd, version of hockey. Not fair for the goalies to have no stick, no pads, no gloves (catch gloves), and have to defend an enormous net.

Not my cup of tea. I'll stick to hockey.

Soccer goalies are in the same boat.

Makes me think of field hockey on ice. Probably same contact rules as soccer, and a softer ball so huge shots aren't easy and it won't rip your face off (some weren't wearing cages)

What is up with the blades on that pair of XXXs? Is it an optical illusion or is the blade almost entirely flat with very little rocker?

It may be flatter. If you think about it, a speedskate is virtually flat. This sport doesn't look like a contact sport and its not as tight quarters as normal icehockey, so speed may be more important that turning in this case..

I played indoor bandy this summer and it was an exercise in pure frustration. That ball is crazy light and its hard to feel on the stick. Shooting is kind of like chipping a golf ball, it was awkward for me. The best part of it is all the skating involved. There is a lot of looping and regrouping to get a lot of speed going into the offensive zone. I haven't done outdoor bandy yet but I might still get a chance this winter.

Before we start bashing something... Bandy, or Ball Hockey (Hockey S Myachom) as it is called in Russia is played outside on the 110x65m rink. Just as in Rugby, the game is 2x45 minutes long. The ball is closer in weigh to the lacrosse ball. Good strikers can hit a goal to goal air shots very casually. Imagine catching one of those at close range.

So, next time you hear someone complain of their 20 minutes of ice time, think about puking your guts out from over exaustion in -30C weather. Also, some of the Russian made Bandy skates are even lower then the ones in pictures, made in all leather. Yet, you are expeted to spot stop, dime turn, control, etc. I have heard of a person tearing their ankle open when their foot actually sort off twisted the wrong way after a collision. I guess the skates are designed not to injure another player :-).

For some history (if anybody cares), Russian hockey legend, Vsevolod Bobrov, actually started playing ball hockey first, and then transitioned to ice hockey where he ruled (40s - 50s).

Well, to be completely honest he did play soccer first, then ball hockey, then ice hockey.
