Megamandan 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 If it's an away game; the team has a buffet style meal at the hotel consisting of grilled/marinated chicken breasts, salad, rolls, pasta, alfredo/tomato sauce, oatmeal raisin cookies and water. If it's a home game we get a meal delivered to the rink and it's usually the same stuff, meatballs are sometimes substituted for chicken. Thats at 2:30 for a 7PM game and 3 for a 7:30PM game. ThePurpleCobra 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 I have a book on nutrition and what it says and what i do is, eat a good breakfast like eggs and some protein, have an early lunch and load on carbs and say if your game is at 7 eat a good size meal at 3. Around 4 hours before. Pasta and alot of carbs will do you good. And remember its not just the day of you want to eat well, the day before should be mostly carbs. LOTS OF WATER
hockeydoc 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 The only meals I eat is 4 hours prior to game time, fluids 1-2 hour prior. Depending on how I feel I will have something high in sugar within 30 mins, but only a little, to wake me up. I don't usually run out of energy during games, but I sometimes am a slow starter, so the sugar rush seems to help.I don't ever eat a lot of anything within 3-4 hrs of a game or I feel like ca-ca. :( I also don't drink during most games, unless it's a 2nd or 3rd game in a row, like an Iron-man tourney or something. Jim A 4 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 up until a couple years ago I could toss anything in my stomach before a game ...now I when I have a lot of 7PM games I take a later lunch..make it a bit bigger and then drink a Cytomax on the way to the rink (its not sugary like gatorade and doesn't sit in your stomach) for a little pick me up...I usually have something at the house easy to make after the game (ie rice and some prepackaged chicken)
mac23 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 Pasta the day before or anything high in carbs. Eggs for breakfast, light lunch and/or light dinner of salad or sandwich/small sub. Red Bull(s) in the locker room. And of course, lots of water.

Jarick 5 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 A meal about 3 or 4 hours before game time...sometimes an apple or banana right before I leave for the game. And at least 8 - 10 glasses of water throughout the day so I'm hydrated.I was eating a lot of pasta for my pre-game meal, and I had tons of energy, but started to get tired towards the end. This week I tried having a protein and veggies meal with no carbs and had a lot more energy. But then again my metabolism is slower than anyone else I know. I'd try a carb-heavy meal one day and a protein-heavy meal another day and see how you feel. But don't eat for a few hours before the game as it slows you down and can make you feel sick. AnthonyJTa 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 I play pretty late on Saturday nights (12:30am) so I try and have dinner in me, and cleaned up by 6pm. I usually go with grilled chicken w/ brocolli and ziti from my local pizzeria. They put the sauce on the side for me too, so I can skimp on it.... the alfredo usually makes me feel pretty heavy so I use a minimum, if even. Around 8pm, I'll have a natural peanut butter/banana/honey on 1 slice whole grain (whole wheat) bread, and lay down a bit. I'll have another one-slice PB sandwich when I get home (around 3am) or a ready-to-drink protein shake and hit the bed. I've felt a lot better sticking to that than when I was chugging lo-carb or sugar free energy drinks.
bulletproof_funk 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2007 I'll eat a light meal 3-4 hours before a game and eat again afterwards. Pasta, rice, some veggies and meat in modest quantities. Too much or too soon and I get heartburn after the game. I also drink a modest amount of water beforehand. I avoid McD's and junk food beforehand as that seems to sit in my system and dehydrates me on top of that.
