Tying skate laces

Recommended Posts

Do you lace all eyelets? I use back-lacing ( the whole skate ) with waxed laces and dont lace the top eyelet.

I also was taught never to use the top eyelet but the other day at drop in several people questioned it and got me thinking about whether you should or shouldn't.

yeah why would there even be a top eyelet if you aren't supposed to use it.

Beginner or weaker skater are encouraged to lace up all the eyelets for more support. However, stronger skaters don't need the top eyelet, which in turn will give better forward flex. It's all personal preference though.

Depends on the cut of the skate. I do lace my S500s all the way but not anything else that I've used. I even left my Kors down one eyelet and they're a fairly low cut.

I'd be curious to know how many of you guys lace up your top eyelet and what kind of skates you're using? The only reason I ask is that it's something I've always done w/o ever thinking about it.

I have Graf 705s and I lace them all the way up as it is a fairly low cut boot. Before these skates I had tacks, on those I never did up the top eyelet.

Experiment until you find your comfort zone, it is a trade-off between ankle f;exibility and support.

I don't lace up the top eyelet and I've got RBK 8k's.

I just started doing that this season and as kovalchuk71 said it definately gives much more forward flex and I find it easier to do sharp turns.

used too i'd lace my skates as tight as i could, but now that i'm a stronger skater, i've found myself lacing them looser and looser. Normally I lace the bottom 5-6 really tight, then the last 4 real loose. tonight I'm going to try no lacing the top and see how that turns out. I have bauer supremes.

i have easton syn. 500s and lace them all the way. I tried leaving the top empty but felt out of control. But i have only been seriously skating for a little over a year so...

Had Tacks....didn't do the top eyelet...but I did double twist the (waxed) lace at the top to make it really snug.

Now, in Vector 6's....do all the eyelets (regular laces)

I just tried out missing the top eyelet and pulling the lace around my ankle(because I want some more support as my tendon guard is giving out, yes new skates are in my future) and I really like the freedom of movement. Still enough support side to side yet I can bend my knees really deeply. Before I had some issues bending past 90 degrees, now I can get as much of a knee bend on skates as I can barefoot. I think I'm going to try this until I make the next big purchase.
