Forsberg's skate quest....and what next?

Recommended Posts

Before the NYR game started, Sam Rosen was mentioning the skate quest that Forsberg has been involved in. He is currently wearing Vapor XXXs, but apparently those are not working as well as he would like.

Then came the comment that has me scratching my head....Sam mentioned that during the all star break, Forsberg traveled to Sweden to look for other alternatives. Now I know that Graf AG is in Switzerland, but is there anyone that manufactures skates in Sweden? Just curious.

Im from Finland, and I am almost sure that there is no company in Sweden

that manufactures skates.

Maybe Sam made a mistake, he meant Switzerland but said Sweden, many americans do that :)

I thought he was talking about his ankle injury that continues to bother him. Trying to find a definative answer for it, but I wasen't paying that much attention.

I think he has terrible bone spurs, but can't they make him a custom skate w/ extra padding?

I have minor bone spurs and cover them w/ Bunga Pads.

I read that surgery to remove the spurs doesn’t always relieve the pain…

Was that the surgery he had over a year ago? I studied sports medicine, and I can surely tell you from working with injured athletes that bone spur surgeries are quite painful. What I find surprising is that he can not find someone to build him a comfortable boot. Makes me think his problem is a lot more than just bone spur surgery recovery.

I think his biggest problem is that he did not take the proper time off after surgery. At first they said he would be ready by Jan after two ankle surgeries....next thing you know hes starting the season with only 1 surgery. I think he should of had both done and just waited it out. He would have probably played more games that way.

I'm from philadelphia, and all that's ever in the paper about Forsberg is his quest for finding a new skate. Annoying, really.

Yeah, and Niitymaki is taking cortisone shots to delay surgery. IMO good thing he did, after Esche went down, and he HAD to start.

It was mentioned by Mike Hogan on the Fan590 (Toronto) that Forsberg was going to Sweden to see "a specialist for his foot-ankle-skate problems". A podiatrist I guess?

Thats correct. He went to Sweden during the all star break to see some foot specialist a couple of days ago. I read about it in the papers. He also visited Modo:s new arena (Swedbank arena) to watch Modo:s game against Mora...

It's correct that he went to Sweden. He went to see orthopedist Peter Hedström in Umeå, a guy he has worked with before, to get new ideas as for what can be done to make the skates fit the way he wants.

And there are no Swedish skate manufacturers. Jofa used to make some skates before, but that was quite a while ago, and most of them were not high-end models anyway. Well, Rebellion and Salming do make skates I believe, but I haven't really seen anyone using those at that level.

What confuses me is why he hasn't tried the 9K Pump yet. He says he has problems with his ankle lifting from the skate...isn't the main purpose of the Pump to prevent that?

Who says he hasn't tried them on? Not implying that I know for a fact he has but I'm sure he'd try a skate on in training before he used it at a game so we probobly wouldn't see it with a player like Forsberg or almost any NHL player with skate fitting problems I can imagine most if not all skates would have been tried.

I heard on a sports radio show that the problem with the ankle/skate is that it has been rolling over on him and that it is not that he is trying to get a 'comfortable' skate, but that he is trying to find some combination of brace and skate that will give him the required support and the desired mobility.

I do find it quite interesting that one of the most talented players in the game who has access to pretty much any hockey gear possible can't find a skate that fits. Nor the fact, can anyone modify one that will work for him properly. I think you're right in the fact that he's got a lot more problems than fit issues with his skates.

My sister hurt her shoulder swimming and I live about an hour from Philly which also happens to be the location of the medical practice of the head doctor for the Flyers. I guess my dad talked to him about Forsberg because this guy's been working with him and he knew all about it. One thing he said was that Forsberg is a shoe size of a 9 and wears a 7 skate, but this doctor wants Forsberg to put on a 9 skate and build custom pads for him. Forsberg is just too stubborn and to also confirm, it was indeed Sweden.

this has been an ongoing issue for him since he first had groin/ankle issues..he has tried most everything out there to deal with the pain..

being in a 7 skate and 9 shoe isn't a big deal.most people go down 1.5 or so size wise...he'd be swimming in a 9 skate...

the biggest issue is at this point its not the skate (like say Jagr and his groin) but the injury itself that is the trouble....

I'm not anywhere near a pro, but with my foot and ankle problems... it's been a more than troublesome, and tedious situation of trial and error to find something that works. I mean, yeah I know the guy has been on skates since who knows when..... but as you age, your body changes... with change comes issues with alignment, etc.

I'm going through hell with my RBK skates right now, trying orthotics... my foot is still turning inside the skate. The heel stays locked in straight, but my toes veer to the right a little... so my runner isn't parallel to my foot. It's the worst goddamn thing in the world...

anyways, I guess I'm done ranting... but while I'm not the biggest Forsberg fan, I can sympathize that this stuff can suck.
