Trying out Minor leagues

Recommended Posts

Hi

I´d like to know if anyone in this forum has an idea how it is possible to

get in contact with stuff members of Minor League hockey teams (such as ECHL, CHL, UHL) when it comes to tryout recruitment for the upcoming 07-08 season?

Are agents essential? If they are, who? ....

I´d be happy about any advice

Best Regards

Rocket

I've never done it myself, but from what I understand from a few kids around here who have, you need to be invited. One flow path that I am personally familiar with goes like this: a kid goes to a beginner camp at the same place for a season or two. He gets invited to play on the organization's kid's team. He plays there for a year or two and moves up in that organization. From playing those games he gets noticed by other organizations as well as, obviously, his "home" club. Then when his age and abilities peak together, he gets invited to tryout camps.

Again, this is one scenario, but I have not heard about drop-in type try-outs. If they are out there, please let me know as well...

EDIT: The next posts you read up are going to prove me wrong  That's good news for everyone... Also, I never even considered an "agent" at this level.

Just out of curiousity if you don't mind what league do you play in now?

I was reading an old Hockey News the other day (I think it was from this past summer) and I saw an ad for the Toledo Storm offering open tryouts.

Toleod Storm and Dayton Bombers have brought up players from the Findlay Freedom from the NEHL.

long beach ice dogs (ECHL) did open try outs a couple times at the rink i work at. apparantly the cocky beginners would go out there and just get destroyed. i wish i could've watched :[

anyways i know they don't do it at our rink anymore, but i'm not sure if they still do it at all - check their site...

There used to be a guy that ran a pretty good tryout camp in Edmonton (Derek Prue), but I don't know if he still does that.

As far as I know the SPHL is one of the few leagues out there that have what would be called "open" tryouts.

Be ready. If you try any of that fancy between the legs showboat stuff...well you get the idea.

Enjoy.

One of the goalies for a local Midget A team was at Open Hockey today and was talking about going to try-out for one of these (SPHL) teams. I don't know what would make him think that he would make it, but, if they let him on the ice, he'll be lit-up, for sure.

Up here in Ontario, below the OHL and other Canadian Major Junior leagues are the Jr.A, B and Cs.

If you're great in AAA you'll be drafted by the OHL but if you are not picked, some AAA teams are feeder teams for the Jr.A, B and Cs. Usually good Jr. A players continue their career in US colleges.

It's almost impossible to walk into a try out and make a team, you're usually invited and must have some hockey experience at a competitive level. Sounds right? That's how it was when I played, correct me if i'm wrong. If you're in AAA now you will definitely have been scouted.

there are free agent camps. from what i remember, its like a pay to play thing. you pay a fee to attend and there are scouts for various minor pro teams checking out the camp. see here: http://www.ihchockey.com/hockeymgmthome.htm

and as jr said, you need to have a pedigree.

Would that be anything like the Juniors Invitational held in Wisconson I think? Bascially go to a camp like thing with a couple games and see who would be interested in you.

And like Alias81 said, It could matter what league you play in or previous leagues. If you played Jr A before, the coach would probaly get you hook ups right?

I know a kid who did that camp a few years ago. Basically coaches and agents are there and if they like you that gets you an invite to a teams training camp. In his case he ended up at the danbury trashers camp and was cut early on. Like JR said it would be hard to catch on with any team unless you played decent Jr hockey or some DI or DIII college hockey. Most of these teams only have a few roster spots open and unless you are exactly what they are looking for, you're out of luck. Also, sometimes the good 'ol 'who you know' comes into play too.
