Your First Equipment

Recommended Posts

Everybody remembers their first set of hockey gear. Many of us started out with hand me downs, others with the cheap stuff you'd find at big box stores. The occassional guy may have actually srated with some decent stuff. I decided this might make for a fun thread, so let's hear it:

Skates: Variflex Sub Zero Inlines (Toys R us special wannabe hockey skates, about as supportive as a work boot with a cheap plastic chassis and rocks for wheels. AND they had brakes)

Stick: Mylec Power-Flo ('nuff said)

Gloves: Bauer Lindros 88 (motoX gloves offer more protection than these did)

Shins/Elbows: none, it was roller hockey in the street. I later got a set of Lindros 88 shins and elbows, but never actually used them.

edit: After doing some thinking, I realized that since this is in the Ice hockey equipment forum, I should probably include what I used to start playing ice, although that was about 10 years after I started playing roller. A lot of the stuff was also used for roller.

Skates: Tour Powerplay XL-45 (not much better than the sub-zeros)

Pants/Shoulders: CCM Powerline

Elbows: Cooper 525L (old school all-foam dealies, which I finally just replaced with Nike V-14s. I never thought I'd be able to wear a newer pad.)

Shins: 11" Easton Air. Yes, they're junior pads. No, I'm not really short.

Lid: Bauer 3000/Itech shield

Gloves: Mission M-1

Stick: Bauer 1000 Woodie. I occasionally used my Cyclone too, depending on whether I had a wood or ABS blade in there

Wow. I barely remember 22 years ago, but I believe I rocked very early CCM shoulder pads (what would probably be considered good for beer league usage today), CCM Supra pants, Bauer something skates, a CCM jr. bucket, and a Koho black stick. Oh and Cooper elbows and shin guards.

I started playing when I was 6. This December I found all my old equipment in the garage when I needed 2 screws for my new helmet. I have no idea how it survived 13 years, and 6 moves between my mom and dad but it was all still there (how it all ended up at my mom's I'll never know since there were always arguments about who bought which pieces of equipment, etc.)

Back on topic-

Helmet: Blue Cooper SK2000

Skates: Bauer (100's I think, not sure) with ICM holders

Elbows: Cooper (I hardly wore them, they always slid down)

Shins: No idea, they were white with felt for padding.

Shoulders: Cooper SB60

Pants: Blue Cooper

Gloves: Blue Winnwell with the V on the back made of diamond shapes

Stick: Sherwood

Wow I really had some Canstar brand loyalty back then.

helmet was one of those old school COOPER ones that looked like a giant lightbulb, and had the quick adjust buckle thing on the side.

shinpads were some JOFA ones, i forget specifics.

elbow pads, i just finally replaced 2 weeks ago, they were always too big, even 12 years later.

stick was a 2 piece.. some no name brand one.

It wasn't all that long ago (I was five when I first started ice hockey), but I still don't really remember the details. If I were home, I'd rifle through my stuff and find it all, but I'm not, so I'll try to nail down what I can...

Stick: Winwell ???; straight blade.

Skates: Bauer ???

Helmet: Cooper ??? bucket with Itech Concept II Jr. mask

Gloves: KoHo Jr. Lemuiex...

Pants: CCM ???

Shins: Some small-ass Vics that I used until I was like, 10. I loved 'em.

Shoulders: Cooper ???

Elbow Pads: Bauer ???

Jock: Arbitrary generic thing...
