Just ordered my One 90's

Recommended Posts

How have people found the adjustment period going from XX's or XXX's to one 90's? Will I need to get a heel lift? Should I just get the blades profiled? Is the forward flex similar to the XXX's. Thanks guy's. All input is appreciated.

um, no? i went from d xxx's to d one90's. Only difference was i went from and 11.5 xxx to an 11 one90.

Advice: throw a heel lift in the one90's. You'll feel more explosive like the xxx's

Get them profiled. Also, let them break in before you judge them. I thought mine were too stiff until about 5-10 skates in and then they broke in and felt perfect. It only takes a few ice times to adjust. I would stay away from a heel lift. Just try a forward profile if you feel to far back on your heels, but go with a neutral pitch until they are broken in, otherwise you may regret the forward pitch once the skates have softened up a bit.

Let me know how you like the one90's. I was going to wait for the xxxx's to come out, but may opt for the one90's. I'm also wearing the xxx's now. This is a perfect thread for me as well. Thanks.

Skates are skates. Its not like you are going from driving your grandmother's automatic to your uncle's Ferrari with a stick. Each skate is different but the switch should not be so dramatic to worry about as long as the skates FIT you. I went from Vapor XX to ONE90. It was a smooth transition. As long as you have sized yourself correctly in ONE90, you will be fine. An online purchase of the ONE90 does increase the risk of the wrong size boot if you never tried on the ONE90. Otherwise, skate hard.

I can't agree with Darkstar's comments more. I think it is vital that you try on the One90 before you buy. I never would have guessed the corect size I needed, and am surprised that the size I have is what works best.

I believe the actual pitch between the Vapors and the one90 is the same. However, as the one90 is so responsive and has such a unique feel with the zero negative space and the heel locked in so well, many people have said it FEELS like it has a different pitch.

Why is a heel lift recommended??

In order to get a more forward pitch to a skate it is necessary to either:

• Profile the skate by grinding some of the steel off of the toe of the blade to lower the toe relative to the heel of the skate.

OR

• add a heel lift between the holder and the boot to lift the heel higher than the toe.

Both methods achieve the same result, however, adding a heel lift saves some steel which lengthens the amount of time it takes to “wear down” the steel through regular sharpenings.

it also eliminates the whole repetitive process of shaving down the blade when you finally do replace the steel.

I just hope this fella honestly tried them on before ordering away.. or else we'll end up seeing a pair in the "Sell" forum soon... haha

Do you think a more foward pitch with the heel lifts will force you to bend your knees more???

Well now, the answer to THAT one will open a whole can of worms around here. There’s some differing and strongly held opinions on it… LOL

I would not use the word “force”. If proper skating form is an issue with you then you might find getting a more forward flex helps make it a bit easier to bend your knees and “sit down”. But profiling isn't a magic bullet - it is going to take, obviously, work to improve skills. The properly fitting skate with the correct profile (considering your strengths as well as challenges) does give someone a really good foundation or platform to improve... as evidensed by the improvements my daughter has made this year.

Recently, this thread talked about skating too bent over.

And the thread about my daughter’s transition into one90’s has a ton of information on profiling:

If you want to learn more about profiling or radiusing there are a ton of good threads here. Search “profile”, “profiling” and “radiusing” and they’ll come up. Let me know if you have any trouble with finding them.

I have to admit, I am flatfooted and I was wondering if the heel lifts would help any?? Thanks Hockeymom.

SuperFeet - you very definitely need SuperFeet. Getting the very best point of contact with the ice you possibly can is critical. Add to that I'm a HUGE believer in the benefits of correct profiling.
