if you are ever in Madison area search out Furthermore beer! Their website lists the few places you can get it. Very small operation, but great beer.

Chicago/IL is going to go through Bell's withdrawal this year. The brewer severed it's distribution and (from what i understand) will only be a MI brew from now on.

I am originally from Michigan, but have never been a fan of Oberon.

I'm with JR, Bells has a great product line but none better than Oberon.

I'm getting mixed messages here, guys.

I'll say that Oberon (the beer) is pretty good, though wheat beers don't usually do it for me, but Two Hearted Ale is far and away my favorite from Bell's.

Oberon is hit or miss for a lot of people...it can be inconsistent from batch to batch - and even from bar to bar. I remember I had it at a bar and it tasted skunky, turned out the taps were dirty.

I am starting proper homebrewing when we move into a house on March 17th, but I have been avidly consuming many many microbrews of late. I am a huge beer fan, here is what I said about my most recent tipple over on the caps board.

Moinette Brune Belgian Ale

8.5% so it's potent.

It comes in a wood corked bottle, 750 ml.

Very tasty, with an almost winey aftertaste that turns sweet later on.

The beer has a very light fluffy head for such a strong ale.

It goes down really smooth.

I have had 3 at this stage, so feeling tipsy, as they are potent, and large.

$8.99 a bottle, but worth it.

This may sound silly, but it would be a good selection for someone who is a beer drinker but wants to transition to drinking wine, based on the inital aftertaste and scent

2 thumbs up

I've been having quite a few growlers from Midnight Sun Brewing up here, most notably the Arctic Rhino coffee porter and Arctic Devil barleywine.

some of my favorites include the following:

pretty much anything from russian river, victory, sly fox, troegs, three floyds, thomas hooker, jolly pumpkin, smuttynose, bear republic, ect.

i also love belgian and french beers...fantome, thiriez, cantillion, dupont, blaugies, thiellier, de proef, bailleux, etc.

and bells makes some of the best stouts...the double cream stout is outstanding as is hop slam.

Smuttynose ales are really good. They remind me of Daves Pale Ale.

Very hoppy, but not just hoppy for the sake of it, it adds to the taste.

Being in VA, I also like some of the Old Dominion brews, particularly the Tuppers Hop Pocket ale, also hoppy but not to the detriment of the beer, which is a fine line for me

old dominion had an oak aged stout a few years ago at christmas that was amazing.

im all for hops. lots and lots of hops. if you ever get the chance, try pliney the elder and pliney the younger. just to see what can be done...

Wow!

Are most of these beers you guys are talking about East Coast/Midwest? I haven't heard of most of them. When I was in college I had a little "gourmet" market that probably did not have 2000 different beers but it seemed pretty darned close. Here is Kaliforniastan we have thousands of wines but seemingly not that many types of beer.

What part of the country do you all think has the best/largest variety of craft/microbrews? I may have to pack up the family and take a road trip.

Who on here also makes their own beer? Like BK, I just bought a house and, when it's fixed up, I might try making some.

Pigs Ear brewed by Woodstock Inn Brewery in New Hampshire is worth a look. Brown ale very similar to Newcastle, and as such very tasty.

Newcastle is one of my alltime favorites. Has anyone ever heard of or tried something called "Seaf Stout"? A buddy of mine from Ireland found this stuff in college. I am pretty sure this is one of the reasons he had to repeat that semester  It is a very very dark beer. Almost make Guiness seem like a lager if I remember correctly. It did not have the nitrogen so it had more bite than Guiness.

sheaf stout. austrailian if i remember right. its a milk/sweet stout...

the best areas in the us for craft beer? like mack said, the pac nw has a ton of breweries, as does nor cal, the san diego area, new england...and pennsylvania.

ive been homebrewing for like 6 or so months...nothing great yet. its tough. especially when you are drunk by the end of the boil.

From DE on up the east coast is pretty good for microbrews. Don't like my stout to be sweet, thats why I take Guinness over Murphys or Beamish anyday.

We move into a house on Paddys day, and I already have a room for my homebrew, the wife can have the rest of the house.

I have bought "the complete joy of homebrewing" and hopefully will be able to brew a brown ale that is drinkable by summer

Going to put a vote in here for Arcadia Ales (a pac NW brewery), enjoying an India Pale Ale from them right now.

It smells a lot heavier than it tastes, fairly light with a sweet aftertaste.

Very nice. A lot lighter than the Moinette Brune I had last night
