when you have three of the youngest most exciting players in the league and cant pony up some money for a new rink, i definitely think its time to start shopping around. putting another franchise in canada would probably be the most logical for the sport itself, but the NHL will put it in the most financially sound place. Nothing like a hockey team in Kansas City, wahoo..

well since you're from philly you would probably hope we move west so that we can't own you again like this season... i'd vote for vegas because that would be a great excuse for me to make about 10 weekend trips out there next year...

And not negotiating as hard as you can and "ponying up" could lead to you not having the funds to sign those exciting players in the future.

Houston is probably a better city than KC to have an NHL team. It's too bad Winnipeg only built 15,000 seats.

I'm all for Houston but probably because I live in Austin and would like to see a few games a year and it's a bit closer drive than Dallas.

Winnipeg would at least fill their 15k seats a game. There is some website I can't remember the link to supporting a return of hockey to Winnipeg and it shows the pathetic attendance for a lot of the NHL teams to prove that a full 15k is still better than a 1/3 full arena in a US city that could give a damn about their team.

Houston is no longer in the running.

From the Post-Gazette:

The Penguins also were looking to talk to officials in Houston about a possible relocation, but in a new development last night, Houston dropped its pursuit of the team for now, saying it could not compete with a new offer from Kansas City.

But what are the odds that they sell all the luxury suites and get the same amount of cash from corporate partners in Winnipeg? That is a bigger factor than the number of seats in the building.

Some of the more knowledgeable (NHL, at least) guys at work were saying that Bettman is in Pittsburgh to settle this today (Thurs 8 Mar). He is OK at business negotiations, and found buyers for Buffalo and Ottawa (Islanders too?) when they were in trouble, so maybe he can help the parties come to some sort of agreement.

That's a good point. It's just a gut feeling but I'd say there'd be a pretty good chance they could get the corporate support needed as well. I think having lost a franchise once might get people off their butts and realize it's a privelege for a city like Winnepeg to have an NHL team.

If it ends up being a done deal that they're leaving Pittsburgh then I hope they're at least given the chance to show they'd support a team.

One opinion on this is that he is there to pressure the team into making a deal. They can't move without league approval and Bettman wants to make sure that they find a compromise.

Sucks for Chadd.

LOL

My only fear with this is what is going to happen when Crosby and Malkin are gone or when the fans get used to being good. I think the team is going to end up back in bankruptcy again in Pittsburgh.

I've been hard on the Flyers and Caps too, the other two "local" teams.

We'll never get an NHL team back here in Winnipeg, the area the MTS Centre is in is not the greatest area and most people really don't like being around there at night. I really don't think Winnipeg is too wealthy either, the business suites would be empty. And where would the Moose go?
