Best Cage for Visability?

Recommended Posts

The black paint on the outside reduces glare. Could be marketing gimmick, who knows.

I just put on my helmets, one with a black cage and another with a white. After comparing the two, I prefer the white cage because it has a less distracting view out of the bottom third of the cage, and there's definitely a better visual blendout (when you no longer focus on cage bars and just see through the holes) with the white bars. It's helpful, especially with the puck at my feet or when I'm on the point and I get a saucer pass back.

And yes, I did pretend to skate around my place with the helmets on.

Then this is technology that I don't understand... If it's easier to see through white bars, why don't they just make it a white cage? Is there some advantage to the black on the outside that I don't understand, or is it just for the looks (if so, I don't really see how a black cage looks that much different or better than a white one)?

White on the outside can add glare and most people don't like the look. Black on the outside will reduce glare, white on the inside makes it easier to see the puck. I don't use it but I sold a ton of them to people and virtually all of them said they wouldn't go back.

... I hadn't thought of glare, but assuming people noticed a glare in the first place, and this does something about it, then I guess Itech is off the hook. Certainly smelled of a marketing gimming at first blush, though... I never thought there was anything wrong with a white cage looks-wise, but I wear a white helmet, and have fairly weird taste anyway.

Ever thought about a combo cage/visor? The cage is down by the mouth area which allows you to exhale outwards w/o fogging up your clear visor up top.. Thats what I always used when younger. Never had a problem with fogging up my visor, plus why break the bank for an adult league?

Just an example

Thanks for all the input folks.

I tried looking through a number of cages this evening, and chose the 8500 oval. The Itech with white on the inside seemed to "hide" all the bars the best (inside the store), but the placement of the two middle bars of the 8500 seemed to "dissapear" better.

Got home, put it on my 4000 helmet, watched Shakira on TV and didn't even notice the bars! Let's hope it works the same on the ice!

Cheers

Good buy. I went to my LHS today and checked out a few cages. Both the 8500 and the Itech VIII both had a horizontal bar that ran right across my eyes. I picked up a white Jofa FM480 because I don't encounter this problem with this particular cage, I guess I got the right face for it :)

So moral of the story, always try out a cage instead of buying blindly (like my mistake buying a Jofa 381 on eBay), because they will fit differently according to your face.

I cant stand to wear anything but a visor, but yea back in the day we all had to war a cage of some sort. There is no substitute for actually trying one on and wearing it to get a feel for it.

on one helmet i have the Bauer FM4000 True-Vision

I have one of these, it works fine for me. I had a Oakley combo and it would fog up even with the recomended anti-fog.

I'm also a fan of the 8500

same here, just swapped out my Itech combo shield for a 8500 cage, it's like night and day with the weight savings, plus I really dig the pseudo-titanium finish on the 8500 :)

I have the Nbh 8500 tru vision cage on a nbh 5500(5000)helmet and i have mentioned it in Dr hook's thread. My helmet and the 8500 cage seem to go fine and is hardly noticible. It is light and the vision is truly amazing because everytime I go on the ice I never notice my cage is on, but a bad thing about it was i sweat a lot and I sometimes missed when squirting water into my mouth and it results into rusting. =/ this cage was like 50$ CDn approximately don't remember and the chin cup has a dri-fit liner which is really good because it helps absorb all my sweat =D

does your both side of cage states FM8500 OVAL or FM5500 OVAL cos i saw the FM5500.

Anyone have a picture of a bauer 4500 with a 8500 cage? if you do I'd love to see it.

Here's a 5500 with the 8500 cage. Somewhat close:)

how bad do the normal itech II concept clear shields fog up?

Idk if it matters anymore since it's been a few days...but I'd add that I have no fogging problems at all. I smear shampoo on the inside and buff it off, and it seems to work. I never ever fog. Only issue I have is sweat drips on it sometimes if I have my head down, but I wear wrist bands so it's an easy wipe off for me. I'm a glasses wearer too and don't have a problem with those either.

nickie howie yes both sides of my cage says fm8500M OVAL (m=medium), the cage you have up there is not a 8500 cage because it does not have dri fit chin cup and as TBLfan said, the straps are black and here are the pics i just took. there is one pic where i place the camera in the cage and see how the view would be. btw the cage is kind of rusty =/

btw some of you might find the bauer 8000 better for vision. The bar that goes under your eyes is slightly lower and the two vertical bars in the middle are closer together.

As far as weight goes(all size large):

Chrome itech RBE III: 337 grams

CCM 480: 300 grams

NBH 8000: 356 grams

NBH 8500: 333 grams

can I tell the difference between the weight of them on my 692? no.

The 8000 fits my helmet better as it isn't as wide as the 8500. The 8000 is slightly longer than the 8500.

I own an I2 and it works great. Starting to rust a bit where the wires join together. I kind of hung up the HS22 and went to a cage. Had too many high sticks and then finally some guy rung one off the post and my face caught the rebound. Left a big gash on my face. So I got an I2 and it's saved me multiple times. I'm always tempted to go back to the visibility of the HS22.

I'm casting my vote for the Jofa/CCM FM 480 cage. Haven't found a lighter and more streamlined cage at this price range. It fits just about any helmet on the market and has a great visual field. I haven't tried a titanium cage yet so I can't pass judgement on it but then again your talking about a much more expensive cage.
