Intake helmet smelly

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with an Intake helmet noticed it getting smelly? It seems as though the blue/white cushioning is absorbing my sweat and it's getting pretty funky. I'm using this helmet for reffing. I can't imagine what it would be like if I were playing in it.

I've not noticed this on other helmets I have/had, but they've not had the same type of interior padding. (Itech HC15, HC100)

Any suggestions on cleaning my helmet interior?

I'm serious. There's no reason why the helmet should be getting that way, I know a number of people who use the intake with no issues. My suggestion would just to be air it out after every use and spray some of that febreeze fabric refresher on once in a while.

So true!

There is a new topic on here every week!

"My gloves/skates/pads/.../.. smell! what can i do?? Put them in the freezer? In the microwave??"

Are we hockey players or p*****?!

It stank the last 50 years, and it will probably stink the next 50 years!

My Bauer has similar 'issues'.....so I was considering getting an intake helmet. I have blower/ionizer for my kids Shock Doctor bag-probably buy the smaller ref/coach bag and keep skates/gloves hemet in there this summer-let you know how that works out.

Buddy swears by small packets he keeps in his full size equipment bag. He works at auto dealer, they throw these packets in cars they get on trade ins-smokers cars get 'fogged' with liquid version of this stuff. He threw packet in another guys bag and game following week it wasn't rank....no odor so isn't masking the smell. Maybe someone in car industry has brand name.

Seems too obvious but are you keeping the helmet in a small bag to protect the visor?....no air.

A few times a month I wipe down the inside of my helmet (it's not the Intake) with a Clorox anti-bacterial wipe. It might be best if you did the same (if not everybody). Bacteria can grow anywhere, and wiping down the inside takes about 5 seconds, maybe 10 if you want to be anal about it.

I noticed the gelfoam in the Intake absorbs a lot of sweat... so I make it a point to always take it out of my bag, and set it in my windowsill so it gets air. So like someone already mentioned, just make sure you let it dry...

My Intake is fine. No odor issues at all. I hang mine out on a hockey tree after every game and periodically do the Clorox anti-bacterial wipe down routine. Also try to wash all my equipment at minimum twice a year. Worked well for me so far.

Yes, it's in a small protective bag, but I take it out after every skate to let the helmet dry.

I might try using some Clorox wipes.

Yes, my "shit" stinks, but I try to do as best I can to keep it to a minimum. I wash all my gear(except gloves and skates) about twice a year in the bathtub. I deal with the skates and replace the gloves when they get too funky.

The reason I posed this question is because this is the 1st helmet I've had that stinks. All my others have been kept stink-free by merely wiping them dry after skating. To me it means this helmet is just going to need the same attention as the rest of my gear, whereas my others did not.

Now there's a guy who knows how to get the chicks interested. Yes, oral hygiene is something they really dig.

Not my Intake but the chin cup on my Bauer cage. That thing is as bad as gloves for smell.

Lately I've been using Lysol disinfectant spray. I don't think it's supposed to be used on hockey equipment, but on my $50 gloves and $5 chin cup, it kills the odor. Works better than Nature's Miracle and it's 1/3 the price.

Other than that, I hang everything up on my drying rack, spray it with some mild Clorox cleaner and Febreeze. I've heard good things about Febreeze antimicrobial and that Clorox wipes sounds like a great idea. I'll have to make a Walmart run tonight.
