NHL Goal judge

Recommended Posts

It seems with video review the NHL would have done away with goal judges. It seems they are just a home town fan who serves no purpose. During the playoffs at least a half dozen times I have seen video review of a play where the home team might have scored, but the puck was not even close to going in and the goal light went off. Do the refs ever ask them about a disputed play, I hope not because they don't even try to hide their bias.

I'd love to have that job. you get paid to watch hockey games and in the end, your word doesnt really matter if it goes to video replay anyways.

Short of putting a sensor in the ice that will only go off if a slab of vulcanized rubber goes completely over it, who's going to operate the goal light?

Why bother with a sensor? A couple cameras in a good position and skippy the intern can push a button in the press box.

seems like a pretty sweet gig to me, i say keep it. they have tried to put sensors in the ball for soccer, too. i like keeping the human element.

In many arenas they have moved the goal judge from behind the net to upstairs.

In one of the last games of the year they showed where they moved the goal judge to in the ACC. It was ridiculous, it was at the top of the first level (on the side I think).

Its a nice feature for the arena, and I think the job usually goes to someone who's done a lot for the organization and wants to be around and collect a small paycheck during their retirement. Why get rid of it?

In the ECHL and AHL most of the one I know about are senior local amateur officials.

Its a damn good thing that guy was sitting behind Miller last night in Buffalo! Yeah, goal judges serve a purpose.

same here in NJ it was the local coordinators, etc who handled the role of off-ice officials...same guys who then reffed the '88 Koharski-Gate game
