Time to move flex up?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Ive been using the 67 flex for a while, mainly because I like my sticks whippy, and I dont have to cut it to lose flex. Lately, when I have been shooting, my stick has been "overkicking" and I feel it bend and twist more in my hands than usual. Is this a sign that I need to move my flex up? Just looking for suggestions

I would give a higher flex a try, and give it time to get used too before you decide to go back, because sometimes the transition can be hard at times

even though the same things been repeated a lot try to get around an 85 or even some prostocks if you can go look at them at your lhs would be a good feel for you

i had the same feelings going from junior to intermediate. i wound up going to intermediate (this is a ways back, btw) and it took some decent transition time. bottom line is, everyone will have to move up at one time, so if youre sensing that your stick is too whippy, then try to make the transition sooner rather than later.

Have you grown or put on much weight in the past year?

you just probably solved the puzzle !

weight can definitely be a factor. My friend put on about 10 lbs (fat) since Christmas and he can lean into his shots quite a bit more (or so he claims).

Has your shot power or accuracy changed? Also, are you noticing too much flex during slap shots or wrist shots/snap shots? I use a TPS whip flex and I guess I'd say it flexes too much during slap shots, but I don't really care since my main goal is just to keep slap shots low and accurate. If I moved up in flex I wouldn't get as much or any "pop" on quick wrist shots or snap shots...which is where I think power is more relevant...at least in my opinion/game.

this is kind of off-topic but has anyone noticed that their flex preferences change from roller to ice?

I was playing roller for a while and just couldn't use a low flex stick, everything had to be 100-110. Now that I'm continually skating out on ice I find that I prefer an 85-95 flex because the 100-110 feels too stiff.

P.S. I find a whip flex just un-useable.

I've heard/read that lower flexes are better for roller, but I'm in the same boat as you, TBL. I feel I can get more out of the stiffer stick on roller than on ice.

good to know I'm not the only one!!! Kinda sucks though because I was playing a lot more roller at the time and started to snag up some 100-110 flex sticks and now I play mostly ice. :(

I don't play roller, but that makes sense TBL. The surface for roller would offer more friction/resistance when taking a shot, so it would make sense that you'd use a stiffer flex than on ice where the blade will slide easier when you're shooting.

I used a much lighter flex when playing inline due to the reduced weight of the puck.

me too... but my last game i felt like i couldn't put any flex on my stiff sticks. but then again i just cut the OPS blade off. i'm gonna try my whippier stick again and see if i like it on ice. but before it just felt like a noodle with a ice puck.

You see that makes sense but it just doesn't work for me for some reason.
