NHL to Add 2 Teams?!

Recommended Posts

and people think Pittsburgh won't last..

As long as they can continue to put some of the best players in the game on their ice, they will be fine. It's the down times that cause problems for them. I believe that they will have serious problems again in my lifetime.

I vote to add 2 Canadian teams.

Canadian Team Count: 6

American Team Count: 24

They should add to Western Canadian Teams. Hockey is Canada's sport, therefore give them two expansion teams and you're guaranteed teams not likely to fold.

Las Vegas is a joke. Kansas City could work....

There aren't two western Canadian cities that can support NHL hockey. Winnipeg had problems when the payroll was around $25M US per team and you can't count on the US dollar being this weak forever. There is an election down here in another year or so.

I really can't see the NHL allowing the predators to move there. QC or Winnipeg are the best bets and I think those are marginal at best. I still say another team in TO would have the best chance of making money and staying in business.

If theres a new team in Canada, my money is thats its somewhere in Ontario. But adding two new teams is completely idiotic. Moving a team to those two locations, not a bad idea, but expansion is the worst thing that could happen. If anything, there should be 2 or 4 fewer teams. But hell will freeze over before that happens... and then Bettman can be the commisioner of the Hell Hockey League and ruin that

Thank God I'm old enough to remember the good old days of the 21 team NHL! I also remember the 12 team NHL, too. Lets just merge the AHL and ECHL with the NHL and have one super joke hockey league with 80 teams. The only fans that will see Crosby and Ovechkin will be their hometown fans. That will sell tickets. "See Crosby tonight!! He won't be back for 5 years!" I wish the NHL would stop shooting itself in the foot and aim for another area, like the head.

Given their officiating in the playoffs, they're working on it.

Yay, the 21 team NHL where only 5 teams missed the playoffs. If you think folks outside hockey laugh at the game now, you should have seen how they laughed then.

Theres way too much hockey heritage in TO to allow a second NHL team to succeed financially compared to the Leafs in my opinion. The attendance will be made up of Toronto hockey fans who 1) cant get tickets to the sold out leafs game or 2) want to see the a toronto maple leafs vs. toronto {insert team name} game

How about the Kitchner area? Seems like that area could support a team. Just from driving all the time to TO, I seem to remember all kinds of towns with 100k+ populations.

Weren't they thinking about Hamilton or London awhile back? Another team in the Province and not necessarily in the city of TO could succeed.

There's three teams in the Metro NY area - using the Rangers as the center, there's one team 7 mi away (NJD) and another 25 mi away (NYI). It could work.

Too far south and you impact the small-market sabres who depend on southern Ontario fans to supplement the locals.

The maple leafs we're spending $62M per year on salaries before the lockout. The first year after the lockout their payroll was $36M. They didn't cut ticket prices, they didn't give away free tickets, they put it in their (organizational) pocket. There is money available in the Toronto market to support a second team, the other owners just don't have the balls to force the issue.

At first it will just be 16,000-18,000 fans that can't get Leafs tickets, no doubt about it. In any case, they will have those fans in the seats and eventually they will grow their own fan base. Just like the Devils, just like the islanders.

I know this is farfetched, but who thinks Alaska should have a team?

Nobody in their right mind.

alaska's largest city (anchorage) has a population less than 300,000 people. I couldnt see that figure being too appealing to the NHL or an interested owner.

Im sure travel for other teams to alaska wouldnt exactly be cheap or convenient either.

I live in Anchorage and as much as I would love a NHL team here, there is no way in hell we would be able to support them.
