Flashy skates

Recommended Posts

I feel I must echo the sentiment of several people that I've heard so far: too much flashy gear will make you a target in a contact league. For instance, last year, a kid on the other team was sporting a white helmet, white Eagle gloves, and white Grafs with yellow laces. Unfortunately for him, one of our bigger guys didn't feel he had the ability to back up equipment that eye-catching and as such made an effort to nail him every single time he was on the ice.

Well ... did he get him?

I agree with the guys that say that you should buy what you want. I'm 41 and play with a group of guys ranging in age from about 19 to 55+ who play in everything from the lower level stuff to the most expensive gear out their. For me its about having the best quality gear that fits that my budget will allow. For me that usually means mid to high end gear from previous years that is on closeout or clearance somewhere. Heck if I am still playing in 4 or 5 years I may even have a pair of those NEW cool looking Reebok 9K pump skates with white trim when they close them out at Hockey World or someplace for a fraction of the original price. Go for the Reeboks if thats what you like because life is short and having fun is what its supposed to be about anyway.

I've never targeted someone because of what they are wearing... I have and do target players that play dirty or are just all around assholes. I don't really care what you are wearing, it's hockey not the emmys... and I'm not Joan Rivers.

Yeah, you have to take into account that your average hockey player isn't as much of a gear peeker as us MSH'ers are.

You would be surprised. Anyone from my team notices whenever I get anything new. Its annoying <_<

And being that there are much more 10.0 SEs than 9Ks... The 10.0 SE is literally the flashiest skate on the market... Imagine it paired up with a torpso holder, you'd have the flamingest skate in the world.

White skates in hockey still make me feel like the owner of white skates would be better suited for this type of ice competition:

Whatever makes you happy. Cool equiment is half the fun of hockey, well maybe not half but some of the fun!

Totally agree with this. Part of enjoying hockey is the gear. Do whatever makes you happy.

WIth the 5k's also available in white, they proabbly won't seem all that flashy if enough people are wearing them.

On RBK's website if you click on 9k Pumps...there is a note "*also available in white"...but they don't have that note on the 5k's. I had heard that white 5k's were coming, but I've never actually seen them.

Maybe it is a myth, but Great Skate does have an item for the 5K in white on their site, I'm not sure if they're using a 9K picture for it or not, but just pointing that out.

On a related topic, I happen to like the flashy equipment. It shows individualism which I like. I loved when Ovechkin broke out with all of the new and flashy equipment. If the NHL can't get exposure from the game itself, at least it gets some exposure from what they wear (Ovechkin's equipment, the RbK Edge unis, the 9KO stick, etc.).

I'm an individualist myself. I don't like having equipment that's the same as everyone else's, which is why I always try and "customize" equipment when I get it, whether it means Sharpieing out logos on gloves or skates, or whatever. I'm all for it, I like to stand out from the crowd. My two cents.

I'm pretty sure Anna notice his red Ferarri before she notice his skates.

So did Anna's mother, I'm sure. There were always stories about how her mom controlled her life, even to the point of aurguing with her coaches. Mom wanted Anna to get rich for Mom.

As far as flashy skates goes, skates have been getting flashier in general. I can't think of too many new skates that look like they did 10 years ago.

The standard look these days is flashier, so the skates in question are not as much of a stretch as when Feds and the Great One wore "different" skates.

I would love an old style look but the newer stuff is more advanced and fits better. Like TLB said, it's not the Emmy's- function over form here.

I tend to like some of the flashier gear. Like people said it should be about individualism and hell, if you got the dough for it, who cares. I have somewhat "flashier" gear and I get mocked sometimes. I have an HS22 straight cut tinted which isn't even a big deal and I'll usually get a "Oh look it's Ovechkin" something along those lines. I don't really let it get to me, plus once I'm out there and they see what I can do they shut up anyways. Just go out be yourself and have fun with it. Your paying a lot of money for ice/rink time and for your gear so you mine as well wear whatever the hell you want.

Haha except for pink gloves, that's just too much for me

i used an oakley jawbone for a while and people would always say "whats with the paintball mask" or something along those lines. They shut up pretty quick when I blasted a few in from the blue line :D Now I want an 8k with one of those cascade shields if I can find one. They look pretty baller to me. I like flashy gear myself, as I just ordered 10.0 SE's haha. But thats just me.

There's a guy on Trinity College's Div.1 team who wears the Federov/Gretzky Nike Air Accel Elites. He's a damn good player, but not the best guy on the ice; he just happens to look badass in those skates, heavy though they may be.

I don't really have a problem with flashy gear, as long as there's *something* to back it up. I really don't need to see Johnny Limp-Wrist Ankleburner giving somebody shit because they aren't skating in One90s.

FYI Trinity College is D3 not D1. They play in the NESCAC. Tropical party used to be fun when they had a ton of kegs.

i just saw the white 9k's on great skate and they arn't as flashy as people are making them out to be. They aren't exactly great whites. Regardless i say go for it. If i had they money I always wanted to buy the pink pair of eagle gloves that are floating around out there.
