neck guard

Recommended Posts

not important because most of us here are over the age to use it no point for this commotion

i wouldnt say most of us and players up to the age of 20 in some leagues have to use it and i use a tackla neck guard that i took out all the padding and folded in half

I've worn mine just cause I have had some close calls when winding up in a pile up. I've used the Itech one, don't like it cause it's huge. I have slacked on wearing it lately though.

myself, going into my first year in bantams, but coming of a AAA peewee major season will tell you that every neck guard is restrictive I've worn, except the NK20 by Itech. It is very thin though so not much protection besides the skate proof texture.

in my old league they made us wear them and i would use the itech one and cut the padding out of it so it was just a flap of fabric around my neck

i have a old polo style Jofa neck guard.

In sweden you must use a Neck/throat guard until you play senior (18 years), this rule came after that 2 swedish players died on the ice, after taking a skate blade to their neck/throat. This happened in the early/mid -90's

Iv'e grown up using a neck guard, so i feel strange skating without one..

I don't use one but my boys have Itech ones that aren't padded. Just a few layers of whatever material (Spectra shield/lite?) they are made out of. They prefer them over the padded ones as they say they are cooler and don't get all soggy, heavy and wet.

I imagine that is quite annoying to have this drippy wet thing wrapped around your throat.

Don't rock one for beer league, but back in HS I had an old white Itech. They're a good idea for youth and HS, when people have less control over their actions.

Welll...I'd add I play adult league. I'd say D leaguers who can't skate are kinda dangerous. You wind up on the ice in a pile up and who knows what is flying around. Had some slices in the jerseys from it so that's why I still got mine.

Only the Q has to wear them... I live in BC so i get to see lots of dub games and have noticed that no one in that league has to wear one

This is what I use, extremely comfortable and I cant even tell I have anything on most of the time.. Its alittle small though as all my LHS had left was sz Medium. If anyone knows where I can get one in a sz. large, pm me.

I wear an Easton neckguard that I took the padding out of. I gotta wear one for league games and HS, but I dont wear it when I play pickup.

what about a maltese gel neckguard?

The maltese gel collars are somewhat popular with goalies.

Absolutely yes. The two things I carry with me when I skate out are my Shock Doctor compression jock and my Maltese combo. The gel is incredible stuff - there are god knows how many stories of Maltese users getting drilled in the throat with direct shots, and just shaking it off; and for every one of them, there's someone with a game they had to pull out of at best, or a fractured larynx at worst.

Remarkably, it also completely protects against skate-cuts. You can cut the gel with scissors, but not easily with a single edge (I'm sure a cutting board and a scalpel could do it).

Oh, and the website is Matese Hockey. They also have a gel chin-cup and a gel jock, that are apparently among the most comfortable things you can find, and a whole range of stuff for replacing the padding in your helmet.

Is the Maltese overkill for playing out? Sure. But I'd as soon take it off as I'd play without a jock.

I wore an Itech one. I'm old enough not to wear one, and I don't. It offers almost no protection other than a cut. There are actually types of Itech...I shouldn't say under armor, that has it all built in. I'd use that, but not just the neck guard itself.

That's the intended purpose.

I'd say impact protection was also a concern, but that's quite likely biased by my 'position' as a goalie.
