Worst draft(s) ever

Recommended Posts

Checking on past drafts, I don't think there is a worse draft than the 1999 draft. The Sedins and Havlat are the only players who've performed like first round picks but the sheer amount of busts is amazing. It's painfully funny how bad the Rangers drafted back then too. You can't even find a bonafide great player till the 7th round in Zetterberg.

You're right, but Connolly isn't half bad. He has played almost 100 fewer games than the Sedins but has just over 200 points. Well, maybe is isn't top 5 material. And Erat isn't too shabby for a 7th rounder.

Lundmark may be bad but he's better than Brendl. Where's he been?

Connolly's not bad when healthy, but he has a skull made of paper mache.

still not as bad as the # of guys in the league who were great 1st round picks that theyve traded away... the late 90's were brutal to watch with that shit

I don't think I'd call any of their first round picks in the 90s great, looking at their selections. Best player of the bunch would either be Kovalev or Cloutier and they're far from anything great.

Before we hear from our friends in Quebec, Kovalev has put up some decent numbers over his career and had a good playoff run in their cup year.

Yeah, but still he's as close to 'great' that they've picked and I wouldn't say he's great. My greats have consistency and heart and...well that's a dead horse cherry picking between the blue lines.

PS I don't want to hear about Comrie and Malone trying to justify a pretty brutal draft.

99 was the worst, but the year before had lots of great players, probably one of the best drafts.

1998 draft:

1-Lecavalier, Legwand, Stuart, Allen, Vishnevsky, Antropov, Tanguay, Regehr, Biron, Gagne, Van Ryn, Gomez

2-Cheechoo, Fisher, Ribeiro

3-Richards, Cole, Beauchemin, Gionta

4-Ponikarovsky, Vasicek, Horcoff

5-Spacek, Raycroff, M. Samuelsson

6- Niittymaki, Datsyuk, Kapanen

7- Arnason

8- Ryder

Im not saying it wasnt a brutal draft, im just saying there is a few good players in it.

If you stretch it out, there's a few good players in every draft. That first round alone is just...ugh.

As for solid drafts '91 and '03 are my top choices.

I think that's like '94 or '95. It had that one goalie...Jamie something. Storr, Jamie Storr.

Damn, '93 was another solid one as well.

Hey, easy on the caps buddy, I never mentioned the draft as a whole just that the first pick happend to be a dud.

(Considering what he was predicted to be anyway.)

Hahah, the Bellville Bulls draft (3 Leafs picks, all Bulls, all bums)

1999 was a terrible draft. I expect this draft to be along the same levels as well. Some good players are always produced in drafts, but some are obviously better. I think the Phillips draft was pretty weak too. I want to say it was the 96 draft.

Brendl?

He plays for Brynas in the Swedish elite leauge. Last year he played for Mora (also in the SEL). He has won the scoring leauge 2 years in a row.

Would pick the 1996 draft has having the worst 1st rd picks... The best pick in the draft was actually in the 8th rd # 204 Tomas Kaberle. Briere stood out only due to this past season and Washington had horrid 1st rd picks in # 4 Alexandre Volchkov and # 17 Jaroslav Svejkovsky .. yikes

Ol' Yogi Svejkovsky. He was pretty damn good in NHL 98 though. As for that draft, even first round alone, it's not as bare as the '99 to me. You have some solid, serviceable picks in the round like Dumont, Sturm and Briere.

LOL, you're right.. Yogi was good in NHL 98 but that was it..

Yes, there were a few serviceable players in the 1st rd but no impact players. In the other 90s drafts, there were a few players per draft that were some impact players (even if they did not last long ..i.e. Yashin = lack of heart)..
