Removing tape from butt end

Recommended Posts

Any tips? My tape job on the butt-end is all mangled and I need to get it off. Tried heating up the tape, sawing at it a bit. Everything just made it a bloody mess.

I just tape over the gunk and I use some of the thinnest tape jobs around, but I guess if you're OCD enough you can get some baby oil or lighter fluid and rub it off that way.

I have some scizzors that I swear can cut through mammoth bones, that worked for me today actually.

The purpose was to take out the end plug, ended up accidentally cutting the corner off of the plug along with the tape.

just keep trying with some smaller scissors. i work in a hospital, and have some good scissors from surgery i keep in my bag and tool box. works like a charm.

dont dig up under the tape like i did. I ended up with three stitches and a blood stain on the carpet.

try not to tape it so tight and change it more often like every 20 ice times or so maybe a little less.

go to the local k mart or something like that and ask for stuff called GOO GONE i rub a TON of friction tape on my sticks probably 2 times a week and somone wanted to buy a stick off me and i put one squirt of goo gone on it and wiped it down with paper towel and it came off each side in one swipe

i always try to take it off by hand and i've punched myself in the nose by accident so many times

so go to lowes (or home hardware if you're in canada) and get yourself a utility knife. it's about 6 dollars and it has a much more durable blade than x-acto, and will cut through anything. works like a charm.

Tearing the tape off and then applying Goo Gone to take the residue and the little bits that're left works very well for me too.

I second the utility knife. Hold the stick in front of you and cut away from your face. Little pushes on the knife and cut the tape up the back. Peel it away. When I was working in a shop I was constantly taking off huge tape knobs and never had any trouble getting them off with the knife.

Small pocket knife, slide the blade between the shaft and tape, cut away from the body.

My tape jobs now are a small butt end with friction tape (easy to remove), Powerflex tape over the butt end and down the shaft, and one strip of cloth hockey tape to keep the Powerflex on the shaft. The whole thing comes off easily if need be.

My years of experience and my constant search to find an easier, more effective way to do things have lead me to this:

The tools for the job

The special shaped blade I picked up at Lowes. Because of the hook shape it gets under the tape easily and limits the amount of scratches that are left on the shaft/butt end. Place the shaft in a vise to hold it steady as you cut. The Goof Off is a miracle product that takes off any kind of sticky residue. It also has many other uses such as removing puck marks from blade holders. It's a must have if you are reselling your skates. Makes 'em look like new.
