Slats hurts avery's feelings

Boo hoo. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. Avery makes his living, in large part, by mouthing off to his elders and betters. Now he can't handle being called a "detriment" (I'm surprised he knew what it meant - agent must have translated.) by a guy with more credibility in his pinkie toenails last Tuesday than Avery will have in his lifetime.

I'd bet this is nothing more than the Rangers' carefully qualifying Avery as a work-in-progress. The brief, in full, probably describes him as a potentially effective player with a history of idiocy - and justly so. They want the arbitrator to realise that any contract to Avery carries risk, and any award to him is a gamble. He *might* be a very good player for the Rangers next season; he might be a total flop who gets banished to the A inside of a month. You don't sign guys like that to 5-year, 10-million dollar contracts.

You can say what you want about him, but without Avery, the Rangers miss the playoffs last year. Not only did his energy and attitude revitilized the team. But indirectly, it moved players like Cullen into correct positions and they played much better because of it as well. He might be good next season or he might not...But the reality is- He was very good for the Rangers this past season once he joined the team. And he should get a deal around 2.5 IMO because of that.

BTW...Slats handled this pretty badly, business move or not. No one should blame Avery for being a little mad

This is the really bad part of arbitration hearings, the teams only strategy is to rip on the player in order for the salary to hopefully be pushed down. Definitely creates a problem with the player in my opinion

I don't think that $2.5 is unreasonable. Do you have any idea what Avery is even asking for? The fact that Hartnell, a guy who put up worse numbers last season received almost twice your number makes me think Avery wants more than $2.5.

I am guessing in the 3's. Sather asking for 1.3, which is sadly low. I have no problem personally if he got 2.5-3

Hartnell is being paid for potential and is expected to get a lot more ice time on Philly than he got in Nashville. Avery is going to be a third line guy and a role player in NY. If he gets $2.5, the Rangers should walk away from the award.

If your owner is a cheap skate pennie pincher like Wirtz, yeah...I guess you walk away from 2.5

The Rags have also gotten a lot stronger up front, and they might not feel like Avery at $2.6 or whatever it is is worth it. Yes he was valuable last year to them, but they also added Gomez and Drury, who will more than pick up where he left off. Avery is a guy who would be suited well by having the Rangers walk away from his award because there is no doubt that another team out there will be willing to overpay him.

The blackhawks piss away money too, they just don't spend it on players who are going to be productive. Chicago signed Cullimore and Aucoin to dumb contracts, then traded for Samsonov.

Avery isn't a top six forward on that team. If the Rangers thought he was that valuable, they would have signed him to a contract already. The Rangers are better off holding onto the $2.6M and using that to fill any holes created by injuries or players not meeting expectations.

Avery is a great player, he prouved that but hes a victim on his own behavour... Thats why nobody is trying to get him as restricted...

Hes like a poor mans Tucker, maybe nastier...

Thats all true, but the Avery camp will probably point out the fact that Hartnell is two years younger, but has played in over 100 more games, and in those games has most likely received much better ice time. Still, I'm with you and walk away from anything over $2 mil. His offense will easily be picked up, and its not hard to call up a guy from the AHL and tell him to piss people off.

I'd still take the chance on him for the 3rd line. Anywhere between 1.3-2.6 is fair. Considering he got upwards of 50 points last season and plays his role perfectly.

True, Kosy....Gomez and Drury are huge lifts for this team and will help if we do lose Avery, but Avery is just a good all round role player who will still help the team. It doesn't hurt his cause that he is very close with Jagr.

I don't like what Sather did, but I understand he did it because he needed to get the cheapest possible contract because of our cap space. If we had more space, he would have been signed by now. Or should I say, the reason he is not signed now is not because the Rangers are worried or skeptical about him.

I don't think Slat's comments are true abourt Avery, this season. Yeah in the past, but not now.

I thought he was a lot more effective in his role than just being "reasonaby effective", nor did I see him taking any worse penalties than some of the other guys (Malik and Jagr took their share of lazy, untimely hooking penalties).

This is just Slats's way of undermining Avery's position to drop the $$ on the award. I did read that sometimes arbitrations can get nasty and it leaves both sides with scars that neither side want to heal from.

I can see...

Maybe Slats made those comments emotionally; his competitive fire may have gotten the better of his reasoning.

Or, maybe he did it on purpose to ensure that Avery plays smarter.

This is what I said in the comments section of the blog I posted...

Sather needs to paint him as some sort of detriment if he wants to keep him affordable.

The Rags are already pushing the cap limit with Hossa and Avery to sign.

Everyone knows he was a key to the rags play at the end of the season, but Sather can't just go in and say "he was great, but we can't afford to pay him what he wants"

Look at the earnings of some of his comparables he will use, and I'm surprised Sather didn't go even harder on him. I can see Avery getting a $3 + million award, because he can argue the intangibles like drawing penalties and such, as well as putting up decent numbers.

Milbury actually made Salo cry some years back during a hearing.

Allsmoke- The most he can get is 2.6, yes? Since that is his upper he set for himself. Someone noted it earlier in the thread. Team set 1.3. So after thinking a little more, I have to guess he will get 2-2.4

We will see tomorrow though

Not sure, SRI said he asked for $2.6, if thats all he asked for I can easily see him getting it, based on numbers and intangibles.

Personally, I hate him, but I hated huggy bear (brashear)when he was a flyer, but love him as a cap (sign of a good enforcer/agitator)

I know Witt threatened to retire after one of his arbitration hearings here in DC (he went twice here)

I have to agree that 2 to 2.3 is fair for Avery, as he still has a lot to prove. Half a season of playing well and not being a problem does not make you deserve a a multi-year deal at more than 2 per.

He still put his foot in his mouth a couple times when he was with the Rangers.

He's always going to though, personally I've grown to like the guy more getting to watch him play on MSG more often, but he's still a bit of a douche. I'll never get his over his "europeans are stealing jobs" comment, then he goes and steals some guy's job in the UHL who I'm sure needed that money way more than he did.

It's arbitration, he didn't expect to hear the absolute worst comments from his boss? The NHL is a shitty business, but it's a business nevertheless so people are going to lowball you and arbitration isn't a place you should bring your rabbit ears to.
