"Mark Bell received the same sentence as anybody else that committed the same offence with these same facts and this same past criminal history, or lack thereof, would have received."

Bell will serve his sentence during the summer months so it doesn't conflict with the hockey season.

Yeh, we can't have that now can we? Pathetic. He should do his six months starting right now.

The United States Penal System has acquired winger Mark Bell from the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2008-9 season. The trade is unusually structured, given that Bell will play an entire season with the Leafs while knowing he will be joining a new team the following season.

Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. commented on the unique aspects of the trade: "We didn't need to see Mark Bell on the ice to be he'd be another flopped speculation. We stand by our track record for picking lemons after they've already been squeezed dry. Mark has the ability to provide our fans with a spark of hope needed to keep the money flowing in, then fade into obscurity on one of our three fourth-line combinations. With this deal in place, we won't have to worry about trading him in the offseason."

Also unusual is the compensation: the Leafs will receive no benefit apart from the departure of Bell. The move is believed to be the first pure salary dump under the new CBA, and the league has remained silent on the issue.

Warden Dino Indelicato expressed his good wishes for Bell in Toronto this season: "I hope he enjoys himself. I hope he loves every minute. That'll make my job so much more enjoyable."

While Bell's earliest set of prospective teammates were surprised by the news, they offered no comment on his situation. But his teammates in the prison system were more than eagre to share their thoughts.

"I can't wait to meet him," said Butch Plunderosa (Man1, 10-12), "him and his nice, tight hockey-playing ass. He'll make a great addition to our locker room. We love fresh blood."

Asked whether he was worried about Bell's expensive cap hit, an unidentified inmate with a tattoo of a Smith & Wesson on his palm screamed, "Cap what! I'll cap that little ho and make him pay for the bullet himself - PRC style!"

For TSN.ca, I'm Kilgore Trout.

It is not unusual at all for convicts to serve sentences on the weekends and at night so as to avoid them losing their job, this is the same type of thing.

I think it sucks Bell got 6 months, that seems like a long time to me unless he has some prior criminal history I don't know about. The guy he hit a) was uninsured and B) didn't have a driver's license...shouldn't have been on the road in the first place if you ask me.

I shot a guy, but he didn't have health insurance and was an illegal immigrant, he shouldn't have been in the way of my reckless endangerment of human life.

If anything DUI should mandate a larger penalty, let alone a hit and run, but that might hurt liquor sales (which are heavily taxed).

That's good thinking!! Do they let you work the register too, or do they keep you in the back making fries?

Regardless of the condition of the person THAT he hit was in, he still was over the LEGAL limit of BAC, and then FLED the scene. Those are two major criminal defenses. With an argument like that it is quite obvious that you have never known anyone who has been hit by a drunk driver....a tradgedy that I hope you never face. But none the less....I feel that he should have gotten a more stiff penalty. It's absolutely inexcusable.

That sounds orwellian to a tee.

He has a spotty history where he was accused of beating up a Cabbie in Chicago. Most knew this was coming, and was one of the reasons Toskala was had for a lower price than Vokoun (who I think is better, but their prices were apperantly similar in trades)

He did not serve time because the Snyders forgave him. He plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter and got 3 yrs probation.

They can forgive him in a civil action, but the state could have gone after him for criminal charges.

And Bell gets 6 months for a commuted misdeamor?

Wow, something is terribly wrong with the system. That, and I think it's interesting that other US sports people get in trouble all the time for stuff that could be considered worse and are always "walking away". If he had been in the NFL or MLB, he gets a fine and pays the guy off.

I will say that the public's mindset towards sports stars is changing and I think we can all thank Michael Vick for that.

What part of my statement is incorrect? He didn't have a license. True. He didn't have insurance. True. Therefore, it follows that he shouldn't have been on the road driving in the first place.

I never said it absolved Bell of any guilt, but as a judge I would consider it a mitigating factor in the civil suit put forth by the injured party seeking 'unlimited damages'. You don't think this dirt bag heard the register going off as soon as he figured out it was a millionaire athlete that hit him?

Suppose I am robbing a bank after hours and due to very negligent construction the roof caves in and I am seriously injured. I don't think the legal ramifications of that situation would be the same if the roof collapsed on a customer during business hours.

We've gone two pages and no jokes about him not missing any regular season games because he's playing for the Leafs? You guys are slipping.

He deserves to spend 6 months in jail if your stupid enough to drive drunk. If your in the NHL don't you think you can afford to get a driver, call a cab or get a limo to go out in? I'm not saying that we all don't make mistakes and he is just as normal as the rest of us but sometimes you need to make better judgement. Atleast he gets to play and that is fine with me.

I'm just still wondering how he's getting time, not that he doesn't deserve it, yet Killer Heatley is walking toothless and free.

That's what I was pointing out. Better lawyer, I guess.
