Chris Simon and Ryan Hollweg have more bad blood between them.

In the first meeting between the New York heavyweights since the Islanders' Simon received a 25-game suspension for a stick-swinging attack against his Rangers counterpart on March 8, the teams engaged in a fight-filled preseason game Monday night that had all the venom of a contest that counts.

The tone was set 51 seconds in when Andy Sutton leveled Rangers forward Ryan Callahan with an elbow in front of the penalty box. When emotions totally spilled over midway through the second period, Hollweg and Simon fought as did goalies Rick DiPietro of the Islanders and Rangers backup Al Montoya.

Sutton received only a minor for elbowing. Then he fought Colton Orr right after his breakaway chance upon leaving the penalty box.

"To me it looked like a real deliberate elbow to the head," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "From that point on I thought to myself, 'OK, this might be interesting."'

...

...

...

"When I talked to (Mike) Sillinger, I asked if there would be any overflow from last season," new Islanders captain Bill Guerin said. "He said that it was over. He was kind of wrong."

...

...

...

Orr stepped in to defend Hollweg and dropped gloves with Simon. That was merely the undercard.

With 11:49 left in the period, Hollweg landed a heavy hit behind the Islanders net on defenseman Freddy Meyer and was whistled for a penalty. Simon charged Hollweg from behind and set off a brawl.

Orr fought Kip Brennan, and Hollweg and Simon tangled. Rangers forward Jason Strudwick, who fought Brennan in the first period, jumped Simon. Islanders forwards Jeremy Colliton and Andy Hilbert joined the fray that drifted toward DiPietro's crease.

DiPietro grabbed Strudwick from behind and gave several tugs, trying to pull the Rangers forward away -- planting his glove in his face. Strudwick fell on Hilbert, and DiPietro kept pulling until he saw Montoya skate from his crease

There is more to the story in the link, this is just the highlights...

That's the type of rivalry the league needs! Now if Bettman says this happened because they played each other so much, I will shoot him.

Actually, and this is probably my Ranger-fan bias, I don't think Simon should have even been allowed to play last night. (or any other PS game)

He was suspended from NHL play, and while the preseason games are not counted in the standings, it's still an NHL game. This doesn't exactly make the league look too good, and the fact that this happened makes it all the worse.

then again, it would have happened the next time they play in the regular season anyway.

More excitement coming this friday when the isles visit the Garden.

don't worry, even us Islander fans think its odd that he can play in the preseason. I guess the NHLPA wanted that loophole in there so that a guy doesn't miss out on the conditioning aspect of preseason, and is further behind the 8ball when he comes back

Anyways, man I wish I was at that game. The last Isles/Rangers goalie fight did not go the Isles way at all. DiPietro is a really strong guy though, I'd take him in a fight against any goalie.

Unfortunately, the worst part of the game for me was seeing those horrendous home jerseys. God those are horrible. The socks make them even worse. I have to say Doobie made the jerseys look somewhat decent though, since all his pads are black so the random blocks of orange in the jersey actually look good

I think they should be able to play pre-season games..i want them missing games that count..not pre-season crap.

Missing camp and preseason games would add to the punishment. His suspension should be extended after that game.

The DiPietro/Montoya fight was just terrible. The thing that's most terrible about it is that you can CLEARLY tell Montoya wants no fight and then when DiPietro clearly gives it to him, he throws 3 more punches at least while he's on top of him on the ice. I mean come on, you can tell he can't fight, why all the extra punches that aren't necessary?

Dipietro is an idiot for fighting at all...remember the concussion from last year.? Maybe he doesn't remember it, and that is part of the problem.

I wouldn't cry if these teams beat themselves to death. I will say I don't see what business Simon has doing on the ice, but that's always been my opinion even when he's not suspended.

Agreed, but since they don't do that, it's one or the other.
