Hip protection for Pond Hockey

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone...

I am playing in a Pond Hockey tournament this winter as well as doing some on ice coaching. I'm looking for some lightweight protection for the old hips without wearing hockey pants. I checked out the referee girdles but they only have soft padding, I was thinking of something a little stronger with plastic inserts. Has anyone tried the RBK 6k Roller girdle or the CCM Pro girdle... what sort of hip protection do they provide. I have a chance to get some good deals from an employee at Reebok, so I would like to stick with the CCM/RBK brand.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replys. Ya Cooperalls would be awesome if you can find them. I am going to go with the CCM PF10 roller hockey girdle. Basically a lightweight stretch girdle with plastic inserts for hips.

Bringing back an old thread rather than starting a new one (I think that's the proper move). Because my question is the same - playing a pond hockey tournament next month, and seems like most people just wear warmup pants or sweats over shins. But I know I'm likely to take a spill on my butt or hips.

Any suggestions? What do people use on the pond? The Alkali CA9 hockey girdle looks really nice, though it's a bit pricey. I think I what I want is good hip/tailbone protection without being too bulky to go under regular long pants, and I don't think I need/want the extended kidney protection that comes above the belt (like on the Mission CSX girdle, which I'm also considering). I'll take my chances from pucks and sticks -- I'm worried about the ice.

I use the RBK 5K girdle for inline hockey, shinny and reffing and it works fine for me. There's no plastic interts anywhere, but it's enough padding to keep most of the bumps and bruises at bay. I also have a Nike Combat padded pant for football/basketball that has a ton of mobility...can't even feel it. The downside to that one is that there's no integrated cup.

I am giving the Alkali CA9 girdle a try for an upcoming pond hockey tournament. I figure I am liable to fall quite a bit too and wanted some padding. The CA9, looked like it had decent padding with better tailbone protection that SD. I should get them Monday or Tuesday. I might start playing some inline too in the future, so I figured it was worth it.

I did buy Canadian brand copperalls look-a-likes off ebay for the pond. But once I got them, they were too big (L instead of M) and way more padding that I expected.

I'll look into the football pads. Still looking at the Alkalis, so I'll be interested in your take. The CA5 looks like it has the same tailbone protection. But I'm a little thrown off by the fact they only come in two sizes. I don't see a sizing guide.

Yeah the size thing seemed odd to me too. But I just decided to try. You could always ask Justin 1933 here about the size of stuff. I went with the CA9 because it looked like there was a little more hip coverage, but it is hard to tell from photos.

I've been using the McDavid Hexpad 'Thudd' shorts for coaching: very light and mobile, and surprisingly effective, with excellent hip and tailbone coverage.

Well I got my CA9 girdle this week. The S/M fits me fine and I normally wear a medium (32) pants/shorts.

First impressions: The padding seems thick enough and is still light, the stitching looks nice and durable. I will do a review after playing some pond hockey starting tomorrow. (Assuming the tournaments still happens since were supposed to had above freezing temps today and tomorrow.)

Cool. I'm the same waist size, so I think I'll go for it (CA5). I figure I can go with that under some sweats/nylon pants, and also shins, elbows, helmet+shield, gloves, and be pretty comfortable and protected. No one wears shoulders, according to pics I've seen, which makes sense. Though I may wear some type of rib padding because I've twice now fell hard with my arm under me and bruised my ribs.

Hope you enjoy the CA9 Girdle. Let me know if you guys have any specific questions. As a side note, we only did 4 total sizes, because of the amount of stretch in the fabric we use.

Is the tailbone protection the same between the CA5 and CA9 girdles? Looks like it is the hips and thighs that differ. And do you have approximate waist sizes (including for the juniors -- I'm also looking for my little guy)?
