NHL reviewing hit on Lecavalier

from Lightning Strikes | tampabay.com - St. Petersburg Times and tbt* by Damian Cristodero

Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said NHL disciplinarian, Colin Campbell, has asked for a medical report on the injury to Vinny Lecavalier; the logical speculation being the league is investigating whether the Capitals' Matt Cooke deserves punishment for his hit on the Lightning superstar.

Lecavalier's right shoulder may have been seriously hurt in the third period of Thursday night's game after he was checked by Washington's hard-hitting forward with an open-ice hit. Lecavalier, who had been skating without the puck, bounced off Cooke and then smacked into teammate Michel Ouellet, who was nearby carrying the puck along the left wing boards.

Lecavalier was on the ice for several minutes before skating off the ice. The team said Lecavalier was hurt on Cooke's hit not when he fell to the ice as was originally believed.

No penalty was called, and Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said after the game Cooke was looking to hit Ouellet until Lecavalier skated in front of him. Cooke did not speak after the game and did not attend an optional practice Friday, and has yet to comment. But Feaster said Friday that Campbell told him he believed the hit warranted a "five-minute major for interference.'' A call to the NHL was not immediately returned, but if discipline is handed down, it will be announced before Washington's game Saturday with the Panthers.

"His comment was it deserved a five-minute major for interference,'' Feaster said. "I would suspect that he asked for a medical report means he's reviewing it. Whether they decide there's any supplemental discipline warranted, I don't know. But the fact that he asked for a report means at least he's taking a look at the incident.''

Lecavalier, 27, one of the league's top players did not accompany the team to Atlanta for Saturday's season finale against the Thrashers. Instead he went back to Tampa for more tests with team physician Ira Guttentag. Feaster said Lecavalier had an X-ray after the game in Washington. All he would say is, "It's not a bump.''

More information is expected Saturday.

just curious... what would this punishment be declared as? Like.. the reason he was punished (if he does get punished)

he won't. It would probably be "intent to injure" which I would disagree with.

I dont think that any suspension should be given. Should it have been a penalty? Yes. Should he get suspended, no. I could see a fine but a suspension is too much for this(despite the injury), especially considering what time of the season and how hurtful to the team it can be.

Pic courtesy of TBLFAN:

(Freeze frame pic with "diagram")

I really want to hear what Chadd and CapsFan say about this.....last night they said this:

killthepoodle: Cooke might have taken a liberty with Vinny

[9:39pm] killthepoodle: you cant let that shit go unpunished

[9:39pm] CapsFan: it was clean

[9:40pm] Chadd: where vinny got hurt? there was nothing there

[9:40pm] killthepoodle: Not what the announcers, both wash and tb, were saying

[9:40pm] Chadd: and I don't like cooke

[9:40pm] CapsFan: Ouellet hurt him more that cooke did

[9:40pm] Chadd: Never heard the caps guys say that and I had the game on

[9:41pm] killthepoodle: radio or tv?

[9:41pm] CapsFan: tv

After watching this about 100 times... I have to say (regretably) that I agree with TBL on this one. Vinny didn't have the puck, Cooke shouldn't have hit him.

Having said that... He doesn't deserve a suspension, but should have been penalized.

Vinny is a great player and I'm sad to see him injured. Hopefully he'll be 100% for next season.

Thats my exact point... I am NOT a fan of Cooke but based on this event I really cant say that he deserves a suspension. I've told you guys this alot, I do my best to play devils advocate and look at things indescrimately... sometimes it is hard but I do try my best.

Hell, how many negative things have you guys read on what I've said about the Lightning the past two seasons?

Canes just lost to Florida...

Carolina fans look like their team just missed the playoffs LOL, guess they've seen the Caps play lately...

Also looks like Boston will win in regulation, which is sort of pointless now that carolina lost.

Will not completely pointless since it ensures the Caps can't loose and make the playoffs, which would have been the case if Boston lost it's last 2 in regulation.

So playoff scenario now is....

Anything but regulation loss = 3rd seed in the East.

Regulation loss = Golf.

From a Canucks fan, I'm really happy for you guys. The Caps deserve to make the playoffs this year.

don't get ahead of yourself, man. If the caps lose in regulation tomorrow, they are out.

The Canes tried too hard to jump into the play and it cost them some goals. I think the Caps have been playing that style for a while now and know how to cover if a D jumps into the play. All i got to say is that if Huet doesn't let up a goal, we are in.......... this is killin' me right now

Russian machine in the playoffs !

Even getting the game into overtime would make them third, this is something to look forward to.

I can't wait till tonights game, I think the way the Caps have been playing they stand a really good chance of making it.

Unfortunatly being from the UK I cant get center ice so wont be able to watch it unless anyone knows if its being streamed anywhere else

Have you looked into Center Ice Online? You might be able to do that.

Well, hopefully for Washington fans Huet plays better in this game then the make or break game against Toronto last year...up 4-1 and then the collapse. Not completely his fault, but some of those goals were ugly. To be fair it was his first game back from an injury and Carbo is the one who decided to play him in that game. I hope the Caps do win tonight as I think they'll be a more fun team to watch in the playoffs then the Canes...I think everyone wants to watch Ovechkin.

Good thing they got Huet at the deadline, completely unexpected but completely necessary. 10-2 with a 1.69 GAA and a .934 SV%. Looks like they will be in the playoffs, I don't see them losing they way they have been playing. The playoffs could be harsh for a young team but they could be a surprise, but I see them not going past round two, but they should be real good next year and with a few FA signings they will make noise all year and through the playoffs.
