srv2miker 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 In 15 years we'll finally be able to answer the age old question - What would Ryan Leaf look like if he was Asian?Say what you want about Ryan Leaf, but he was the most successful out of that family...says the guy with the big Oregon logo for an avatar :)Doesn't really matter - I meant Todd Marinovich anyway :P

N!! 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 Some cold, hard facts:In Orthopedic/Sports Medicine (my profession), the injury rate in YOUTH athletes has risen 400% in the last 10 years. In my practice, we are performing surgeries & rehabilitation on young people we NEVER had to do 20 years ago. Yet we have:- Improved coaching- Improved equipment- Improved surfaces- Improved conditioning programs- Improved knowledge of sport by parentsetc. The examples listed in this thread point to the heart of the matter. TOO MUCH SPECIALIZATION IN ONE SPORT AT AN EARLY AGE!!!! TOOOOO much time in one sport during the calender year. These parents in Florida could be 'Poster Parents' for what I'm talking about. Young athletes bodies simply cannot tolerate performing the same motor tasks at such a high volume. We are in the sports-age of "Specialists." (very unfortunate) Although it keeps us busy here at the University.Young men & women who competed in the 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's were MUCH better all-around athletes. Much better!(it's not even close). Now we are seeing excellent "Specialists."Until age 14 (in one calender year), a young athlete should spend a MAXIMUM of (4) months in the same sport, performing the same 'movement patterns.' Then, get completely away from that particular game until 'next year.' It's alright to play sports year around, but DIFFERENT sports. So what have parents done. "Oh yeah, my son does not specialize. He plays multiple sports." Yeah, little 'Johnny' is playing both hockey & baseball year-round. Ridiculous!.................. sorry for the rant, I think it's all starting to wear on me.Getting back to this thread: Poor little guy. He's missing out on LIFE. And as far as the parents 'goals.' Well, they are pretty much guaranteeing that your child will NEVER get to the NHL! I work with elite professional & amateur athletes every day..... and about 60% were late bloomers anyway. The child schooling everyone at age 5, is rarely the one schooling everyone at age 18.Terrific post here. It seems like the days of football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball during the spring and summer have gone the way of the dodo. But instead of seeing these superathletes, like what specialization would suggest and whose proponents promise, we're seeing 12-year-olds having the head of their radius shaved off and the pre-developmental olecranon process being scraped out.The only reason that I've heard for training kids year-round is because that's what the communists did and look how good they were. It overlooks the basic historical fact that whatever kids couldn't make it in their sport were simply sent back to mining the earth or working in a factory; after all, you have to break a few eggs if you want a glorious omelet, right? -brady2 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2007 Hereing all this makes me glad I had two baseball parents growing up, so I didn't get physically burnt playing hockey.Saying this, my dad was a little bit like this, but not just with one sport, he trained my ass off to get good at hockey, baseball, volleyball, badminton, etc.

TBLfan 25 Report post Posted December 2, 2007 He's pretty sick. His reach and shorter strides really hinder his ability. He seemed a little small in size for adult pickup.

TheBert 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 My most awkward moment like that was when I was visiting my friend in Nashville for the first time. I approached this girl, and before I even said a word, she smirked and goes, "Oh please, get away from me. You are Asian and you're coming up to me? The **** you thinking? Get back on your boat house or something".True story.I ended up hooking up with her friend. She was furious.

Shark#81 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 RE: Black ice.The plastic is the same stuff we use on our waterski sole plates. Hard to find formulation of HDPE. Used with silicone you can skate on it, practice sweeps etc. - it's great. Our son in the vid is the youngest of four kids, and that vid shot back in March so he's 2 years 7 mos. He's 3 at the moment. He's not big for his age, even on the small side. Got a wicked slap shot too, which is funny to watch. Daredevil on the scooter and skate board which is not so fun to watch! With the exception of the little guy, none of our kids have any desire to play the game, even though I say "hey it's like a video game but in real life". They do other sports. I've never experienced organized minor hockey, but in this town it seems they are really good with the kids. So maybe, maybe not.
Jim A 4 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 i wonder about some of these parents, how many of them weren't athletic growing up? Because if you were, you should know better..so many times the best kid at 5 isn't the same one leading the way at 12/13 once height/weight/strength come into play... Sparty4 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2007 I grew up playing hockey, as I suspect many others here did, and there were a few kids that I knew whose parents pushed them them to the limit and I don't think any of them are still playing, let alone at a high level. I think that kids need to play the game because they want to. Honestly, I think I have more fun playing beer league now than I ever did when I was younger. BoDangles 0 Report post Posted December 4, 2007 For those people who are saying that there are no goalies, that was a pratice that they filmed him at. I'm pretty sure playing travel hockey with 8+ year old kids they have goalies.
