Father vs Son Games

Recommended Posts

Anyone else done these before? Our game got cancelled last night because of inclamite weather, so we just took our ice time and had a good old fashioned father vs son game.

It was a whole lot of fun, anyone else ever partcipated in these?

Definately not the same thing, but during our summer league, our goalie couldn't make it, but the kid of one of the guys on the other team was a goalie, who had a game at the rink before us, so had his gear.

He stepped in and played against his dad for us, and we won.

HE was chuffed, then his dad told him he had to walk home, in his gear :)

Last year, my son's tyke select team scheduled a father/son game, and the idea wasn't fathers against sons, but some easy-going shinny, with mixed teams where fathers could play with their sons.

So, we get there and the coach is in a referee's outfit, and we think, "hey this is going to be fun". We all get out on the ice, and the coach blows the whistle, and commands our presence at centre ice. Much to our surprise , he yells "3 hot laps on the whistle, then redline blueline, blueline redline"..he had a pretty good laugh as did the kids skating some lines with us old guys.

Honestly, it was pretty funny; and we all made sure we skated next to the father who was an ER Doctor. We were totally gassed in something like 5 minutes!

It turned out to be a fun event.

My friend's nephew's team did that last year. They had the parents go out and his mom and dad both went out. Best part, his mom played for the Pandas at the UofA and ripped apart some of the dads.

End of each season we have a kids vs. coaches/parents games. Several moms play also, which is their one time each year skating. That's the funniest part. We always have the kids commit some egregious foul to allow the moms to have penalty shots. Started as squirts, now 2nd year bantams. Getting a lot more intense.........

When I was younger, we used to always have atleast 1 father son game a year, sometimes two. I remember once in novice we had a game before the holidays, one father played in a Santa Clause suit( no helmet, santa hat) and got hit in the foehead by a deflected puck.

Our coach is a Goalie, and most of the other coaches on my team play in mens leagues, so every Wednesday, at 3, we rent the rink and have a little Parents VS Kids game, and its really fun, they dont try to thier full extent though, as we would be obliterated. Its really fun though,my dad dosent play though, as he never skated for 20 years. Lol

Ti-girl...

Along those lines, I once worked for a company (about 17 years ago), and a few of the boys had rented some ice to play pick up. A young receptionist, asked if she could come out for a skate with us, we said sure.

She came out and was unbelievable...turned out the receptionist was Geraldine Heaney. She went on to be one of the top players for the women's Canadian National/Olympic Team. Probably one of the best female players in history.

Here is a link top her on CBC's Think Hockey segments:

we always had the parents vs kids game. when my som was a squirt we made sure the moms were involved. For his squirt and pee-wee games I would dress out fully and let the kids know that I was fair game and to take thier best shots because it would be thier only chance. They always had a blast with trying to nail me and I would always get one or two parents that didn't play to ask me to make sure thier kid got a little hit put on them. These games were always a blast and leave some good memories. My son is a first year Bantam (AA) so I'm not sure what we'll do. Normally the Bantams and Midgets have a game and mix the teams up so that it's not the kids vs parents.

That was essentially the way it was. I was nursing an ACL injury so I couldn't go out but I went and watched. She walked out and a few of the dads snickered until she started firing some shots and doing some tricks. I laughed. The boys stopped and stared.

Her husband played for...either the UofA or UBC so he's pretty darn good too. No wonder their kid is amazing.

Our rink used to have 'Father-Son Hockey' every week. It was one of the drop-in sessions. Many good memories of not only playing against my boy when he was small but also with some of the kids I've coached since they were little.

Now we usually we do one during one of the Christmas break practices. Now that they're travel Midgets they're a little harder to keep up with but it's always a blast. B)

I used to coach the beginning skaters when my son was in the class. One of the coaches was Chris Bailey from the US Womens hockey team. Talk about an awesome all around player. She arranged for thier team to play one of our Fireman's teams (who think they are something). The women beat them to the point of embarrassment. The only goal the men scored was when one of the women turned and put it in thier own net just so the men didn't get skunked. After skating with Chris my whole attitude toward women players changed.

back in bantam during every christmas break our coach would get ice and our team would play the father and our coaches. Definately a good time and showed us how lucky we are to even be able to play the game and have a good loving family it was great.

I actually played in one just this morning! My son's Atom team had a parents/kids game followed by a potluck and white elephant gift exchange. I played for the parents along with my 15-year old son who hasn't played organized hockey in 5 years. We lost to the kids 9-7 and it was the most fun I've had playing hockey in quite sometime.

I just wonder how many more of them we'll be able to have before the powers that be decide it's too risky legal-wise to play these games. :(

The Tuesday adult team I play on has a father and his 2 sons on it. When we can swing it we let the 3 of them play on the same line. Not the same but still pretty neat.
