New pants (hip protection)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Im in the market for some new pants. I currently have the Bauer 8000's in size xlt which fit perfect. However i have had some bad hip injuries in them. I had to have surgery earlier this year beacuse of some truma caused by getting hit into the boards. I also had extra pads swem into my jock to help cushion the blows. I'm 6'4 200lbs so the size is also an issue for me.

Any suggestions for some pants with good hip protection?

What kind of pants does ovechkin use? I like that style.

I was aslo looking at the TPS R8's. how are they?

thanks for the help!

I'm not familiar with the TPS pants you asked about so I refrained from posting earlier. My suggestion for better hip protection is usually Tackla 9000 or 5000, both of which can be ordered in the "tall" model that gives you an extra 2" of length. I don't know anyone who has ever had a hip problem while wearing either of those models.

If you want protection, you can't go wrong with Tackla. I have some older ones (pro 900, I think. The inside label has worn off) and they're built like a tank! I'm 6'2" and my XL size pants come down almost to the middle of my kneecap when standing straight up. The legs are roomy, too.

Higher end Easton pants also offer excellent hip protection. The Stealth S-9 and S-5 are built like tanks but are slightly heavier than the Tackla pants. If you prefer the Europeon fit the Graf 700's are also a good bet and fit much like the Tackla pant as well.

You may also want to keep an eye out for some prostock pants- CCM/RBK comes to mind. There is more than enough padding in the hip, thigh, and tailbone area.

considering ovechkin is endorsed by ccm and the fact that his pants say ccm i would assume he wears ccm

Yes he does wear CCM. I find they don't make a bad set of pants but they are tighter fitting than a RBK or Tackla pant. Don't like the solid thigh pad at the front either. But then again the fit may suit you so try a few different pairs on. Usually the one that fits nicest in the store is the one you should get.

I had a pair of CCM 520s a number of years ago and I've seen countless pair of pro stock 520s since then. Fantastic protection but, as mentioned, the one piece thigh pad is a bit annoying.

Your best bet is to go with what fits and feels right. In terms of protection, Tackla and Easton (the higher end eastons) offer GREAT protection. Yes, they are a bit bulky, but you get the protection you need.

Try to stay away from the lower end model pants. Usually they're made very light, but with very little protection compared to higher model pants.

I'd be willing to bet that with some small tweaks that they could seriously help the mobility issues. I have to assume that it's done at the pro level from either CCM or equipment trainers.

My CCMs were 692 and they were a few miles ahead of my one90s in protection.

A hinged thigh pad, like the Tackla version would be fantastic. The problem is weight sells, not protection. Kids don't want protective equipment, they want whatever is lighter and going to give them "more mobility". It's no surprise that injuries are up with most youth hockey programs in my area. I would expect that other areas are seeing similar increases as well.

I like the 9K pants alot. I'm in Tacklas right now. 951's. I am considering the 9K's for my next pair. I've had my 951's slide out of place and ended up bashing my hip. The girdle system in the 9K's stays in place really well and is quite protective and really mobile.

I'm 6'0 185lbs wearing a L in my TPS R8 and like them a lot. Coming from CCM 692 they have lot more hip and back protection and are a bit longer. A bit heavier, but not like the ProTacks. Similar traditional fit...good lining, they dry over night in our drying room...for about 100$ as a good deal...just get them.

Just got some Mission 110 and took a nice fall during pick up. Back pad did its job no bruising. Nice pant, light, not the adbominal snow man pant from CCM as far as padding but adequate

Mission pants are a good bang for the buck. Not bad protection and I find them one of the best ventilated pants on the market. The fit is slightly bulkier at the legs as they seem to fan out almost like the old bell bottom pants of the 70's near the bottom cuffs. Very well padded however. As I've said before I wouldn't hesitate to use a lot of Missions equipment. Stay higher end as well though.

I realize that ovechkin wears CCM pants. And im sure they are pro-stock. But from looking at some pictures they looked pretty mobile and flexible. Just seeing if anyone had them. Thanks Hoff

If you place hip protection at a premium, try the RBK 9K pant. They can be custom adjusted and they offer great hip protection. The 9k pant gets mixed reviews on this board - yes they are heavier, but once you have them dialed in right, the weight on the ice is not noticable.

9k's are pretty bulky, i think the tackla 9000 are the best bet for you

not to heavy, with mobility and protection (just to add im in the Bauer 8000's and have never had a problem with protection)

Not to thread-jack, but since we're on the topic of pants, and Mission has been mentioned a few times... how are the Mission L5's? My local Pure Hockey has them for $40, and they seem like a nice sturdy pair of pants. I've been considering swaying away from the girdle.
