Full Face Shields

Recommended Posts

I need some help I just transition from half shield to cage. I absolutly can't stand it. I have seen some different combo setups. Half shield and half wire as well as full face shield. They are expensive and would like some opinions of whats comfortable. I need to find something due to the fact I can't deal with the wire. Thanks

How many times have you worn the cage? If only once or twice, I would really give it a couple more tries. You get a lot more airflow with a cage and there are no fogging/scratching issues with them either.

Owners rave about the Itech FX-50, it's the combo shield and wire cage that has replaceable shields. A tad pricey but a good long term investment I would imagine.

Use the Itech 920. It's cheap and useable...I haven't had any issues with it at all cept for the fact that it was too narrow for me to put j-clips on my helmet with it. I had to strech the cage part a tad bit to make it fit.

What color is your bird cage? When I played high school hockey, I switched back and forth between a chrome bird cage and the itech fishbowl. The transition between the two was very easy for me. Black offers much more of a problem when switching.

Itech Titanium. It's lightweight, which essentially feels like you're just wearing a helmet and has great vision in my opinion, but I've been wearing a cage for quite some time. The $150 price tag may be steep, but it's rustproof as well and I think a good investment.

Another vote for the FX-50. It's expensive at first, but one or two visor replacements later (1 or 2 seasons maybe) and you will have saved a lot compared to a full shield or even a visor by itself.

The replaceable shields are dirt cheap. I bought a few when I first got my combo but the original shield has held up so well for an entire year that I haven't had to replace it.

I've been using the CCM/Jofa FM 480 cage for over ten years now. It's light, has thin bars which are nicely spaced for great vision and very protective. It is also reasonably priced.

If you have some cash to throw around then try the Itech Titanium cage, heard lots of great things about it. The Itech FX50 also a good choice as already mentioned. I've been wearing a cage for a long time now and wouldn't even dream of playing without one. No scars on his guys face.

Hi Bert! There are 2 types of replacement shields...did u try the 'normal' rx2 or the 'deluxe' drx1 ? My girlfriend gave me a fx-50, it came with 2 shields. I also got a drx1, still sitting in its box...like my fx-50...can't switch to combos.

First thanks for all the help and sugestions. To answer a few questions. I have worn it probally about a dozen times. I have the Jofa FM480 in black. It had the widest holes so I bought it. I have worn a half shield for years now. I am looking at the combos because they give the half shield part to look through. Some years ago I saw a guy with a shield that came down past mouth area maybe a little further to the chin. He called it a 3/4 shield no wire just a shield. I have never seen anything like it since. Then again I haven't really looked. Do they sell such a thing. The one I have now comes down past the nose area it's a Itech RBE1 its sratched up and am ready for a new one so now is the time to make my move.

I also have another question about the Itech FX-50 will it fit a Bauer HH5000 large helmet. I was looking at it on hockey monkey and they have compatibility chart that I don't understand. It says if you see the hockey monkey symbol it fits but, next to my helmet it has STD.

For a 3/4 shield, you may want to check out the Oakley Aviator with vents.

Itech Concept 2 DLX is the only way to go

Agreed. Visor with plastic cage at the bottom, no loss of vision and no problems with fogging up. I went from a shield, to a cage, to the FX-50 and none compared to the Concept 2.

It means your helmet can use that model in standard size because some helmets need a size small which is why is has STD next to yours.

Doctor Hook, My old Itech Concept II (not the Deluxe version) did fog up when you stop moving. The airflow is what kept it clear --- inbetween periods is when it would tend to fog up. I just took the helmet off until next period started. The Itech Concept II has alot of scratches and I just bought the Deluxe model --- not supposed to fog up or scratch. I like it because its light weight too.

any update on how this shield is working out? I'm considering whether to go with the regular or deluxe

Another note on the FX-50: I bought one because I wanted a shield but wasn't willing to risk the bottom half of my face.

I put it on my Bauer 5000 and it was easy to install, but it didn't quite fit right. When I tried strapping it in the top of the cage would not sit in the J-hooks. I tried a few adjustments and none worked. I read that a lot of ppl have had this problem so I just returned it and went back to the full cage.

Not a big deal if you don't mind it sitting all the way up in the J-hooks but it really pressed on my chin and felt very awkward when I tried it.
