Shin Guard Standard

Recommended Posts

Would any one say that there is a standard way to wear shin guards? From what I see, about half wear them with the shin guard over the tongue and the other half wear it tucked behind the tongue. I believe it comes down to a matter of personal preference and that is what two of my reps from different companies have said as well. I think it's fair to mention both ways to customers who aren't set in one way. Any thoughts?

As the reps said, it's really personal preference. Though, I'm guessing that most younger players put the shinguard behind the tongue (I guess it seems more natural, but not necessarily better).

That said, the majority of my team wears their shinguards over the skate tongue. I switched over to that style about 2 years ago.

Definitely personal preference, but it's been my experience that the skate boot and the shin guard design can both affect the comfort of wearing the shin guards in or out. I however haven't really found that wearing them one way or another really affects the length of the shin guard, so the right sized shin guard can be worn by the use whichever way is most comfortable to them.

Depends on the fit of the skate for me. Right now with one90 shins and vapor XXXX skates, I'm wearing them outside of the tongue.

I like my skates fitting snug to my foot and ankle area, not with some bulky protection wedged in between myself and the tongue.

On top of that I think there's added protection if I wear the shins over top of the tongue, it affords me to wear a longer shin pad.

Plus it looks better.

when I was about 10ish I was getting new skates and shins the guy at my LHS told me to that you tuck them in and thats how I have been playing since then. I tried the other way its just doesn't feel right to me. I also wear a size smaller shin guards so I don't have to lace differently or looser in some spots.

Being a shorter skater, I find that even 14" shin pads tend to be a bit long for me. I therefore wear mine outside the tongues of my skates out of necessity. All of the 13" shin pads I find are junior models aren't wide enough for my knees.

Sucks to be me, eh? ;)

it is personal preference, however when I am sizing kids up in my store I usually tell the parents about the option of wearing the guard on the outside in a size up as a means of buying some growth room. This is all depending on whether the kid likes/can stand the way it feels if it is different from his norm. When the kid grows, put the pad back inside the skate.

For me, its over the tongue. I like the feel, and back when I was playing bantams and I used to wear my tongue out I hit a kid, he stepped in the gap between tongue and shin pad, and I ended up with a nice 2 inch long laceration that soaked my entire skate with blood. Lucky I didnt cut any tendons. It was funny watching the faces of guys getting ready to go out next when I took my skate off, some turned green.

one of my LHS used to profess over, over, over. More than preference, they said it was to safeguard your ankle in case someone's blade came down on your leg. Tucked in it would go between the tongue and pad to slice you open. Not sure how credible that is though.

I can wear mine either way no problem. When I wear my shins over my tongues I use a 15 inch shin guard. When I wear them under the tongue I like to use a 14 inch shin guard. The reason for this is when I wear the shin under the tongue I find it tends to push the shin guard up on the knee area a bit. If you use a 15 inch shin guard your knee doesn't sit in the knee cup properly but if you use a 14 inch it tends not to push the shin up (because of the lack of that one inch of material) and your knee will sit correctly inside the knee cup. This has always worked well for me.

It's all pp. I used to wear mine inside on my Bauer 7000s, but when I got my one90s I went to outside. I think it had to do with the shorter tongue.

tried both but prefer putting shins over tongue because it feels more comfortable and to me the other way seems to expose more in my case and i dont really like it.

It's seems obvious that its personal preference based on all the replies. What percentage would anyone estimate that players wear their shin guards over compared to under? I think its about 70/30 that wear them over.
