Fletch

Here we go again.....

So I guess you wont be joining any foot fetish groups anytime soon....Thats some serious surgery my friend. Metal detectors must just love you. Air cast or crutches?

Crutches....6 weeks. And thankfully, metal detectors don't go off for me when I go through them (I have to travel a couple times a month for work). However, the metal detecting "wands" go off when they brush me down with them at Staples Center.

Don't you find it somewhat unsettling that there is better security for a hockey game than at the airport?

Has anyone else had haglund deformity? What is the recovery time after surgery just for haglund's and has anyone had any non surgical treatment that got rid of the bump?

Just thought I'd add that my heel still hurts like hell. Probably the most painful spot after all the work I had done.....it's crazy. And my achilles is really tight because of it so I am doing a lot of calf raises a day to try to loosen it up.

Hey Fletch,

Happy to ear your doing better...

I had a couple of questions about the implants now that you had them for a while...

can you feel the implant in your foot when you walk, does it move or does it feel solid?

Did it change the shape of your foot, like can your foot sit properly on the ground?

is your ankle bone still sticking out inwards?

did you lose any motion, like i know it prevents pronation but did you lose supination or do you feel any pain?

thank you...

I can't "feel" the implant - I have some soreness at the incision point but that's it. The implant is deep inside the ankle. I asked my Doctor about it and he said that after 1 year if it's still bugging me I can have a cortisone injection in there to get rid of it.

It changed the shape of my foot in the sense that now when I stand up I have an arch. It's not a huge arch, but it's something - which is much more than I previously had.

As for the ankle bone, I assume you're talking about the navicular bone (right above the arch). My doctor shaved them down on each foot so they don't stick out now.

I have lost some motion but it was the excessive pronation that I lost, which is good because the foot "shouldn't" be able to move that way anyway. And I do feel pain still, especially in the right foot since I'm only 3 months post-op but it's getting better. I'm done with physical therapy and the therapists there were pretty amazed with how well I'm doing. The left foot feels really good (8 months post-op) with the soreness I mentioned earlier and some minor soreness in the arch. I expect the left foot to be fully healed in a couple months.

No i'm talking about the ankle bone...

did your feet not look like this?

do they look like this now?

heres the site

Yeah well for me, the plot thickens, I had the Opportunity to be seen by a Craig Camasta P.D.M from Georgia, he was in Montreal performing surgery with a local doctor so he took time out of his day and saw me and gave me a pretty good rundown of what the MBA implant was about. He gave me a buyers beware about it since he said he's seen some long term cases where the implant eroded the bone (like chewing the bones up) because the implant is a metal and bone is actually soft so in the end, the implant ended up causing irreparable damage to the inside of the foot. He also mentioned that he thought that in most cases it was due to the implant inserted being to big for an active person...

I'm not really worried about eroded bone stuff, at this point, my main concern is that once I get these I wont be satisfied, or worst, i wont be able to skate... Right now my skating situation is better because I tape my ankle before each game so the pain I use to feel all day from my foot rolling in my skates is almost gone but I still have issues with regular walking, not pain but i just feel like it's wrong and causing damage and stiffness to the rest of my body...

If i put these in and i end up not being able to skate because of pain or not being able to walk, I'm going to be vary disappointed...

I'm looking at 5,200$ for my right foot and maybe 1000$ less for the left... Plus travel to Detroit...

Yes, my feet looked like that before and now they look like the second pic. There has been a HUGE difference, believe me. Hopefully I will see a big difference in skating too when I can start up again next month.

As for the bone eroding thing, I have never heard of that....my surgeon has been putting them in for a while and he is chief of staff of podiatry at a hospital around here, so I trust him. Even if that does happen to me someday, the implants can be taken out and I guess I'll be where I was before the operation.

That really sucks that it's going to cost you that much to get it taken care of....I feel for ya, man.

Well god damn.

My shoulder's been bugging me for the last couple years. In August of '06 an MRI showed no tear. I had another MRI on Monday because it's been hurting so much lately, and this time I had dye injected into the joint as well. Turns out I have a 60% tear of my labrum as well as a slightly torn ligament in my bicep.

Surgery in July.....out 6 months. I was really looking forward to playing next month once my feet are finally healed and now this.

Fuck.

I'm not going to say that I can fully empathize....but I've been through similar scenarios. All I can say is....sorry. And hope that things end up working out for the best for you.

Seriously....no metal this time, thankfully. I need a drink.

I haven't skated since March of '07....looks like I'll be waiting longer. I haven't gone this long without hockey in 19 years.

Well, I have a 16 month old son running around now and a daughter (due in 2 weeks) to keep me busy so hopefully that will make the time fly by quicker. ;)

Look at the bright side.

Elaborate, please.

Tough luck, though. I hope there aren't any setbacks.

Thanks, me too. I guess a positive out of this is that I can allow more time for my feet to heal because right now they're both still pretty sore...especially in the morning.

What he's quoting is a little before ATHF's time.... ;)

Sorry to hear about the labrum, Fletch. That little shit ended baseball for me.

Luckily, I only squander all of my athletic ability on hockey ;)

How's it doing these days when you play? Any pain? My brother had the exact same surgery when he was 32 (strangely enough, my age) and I want to ask him about it but he's in Ireland right now. I know he was fully recovered after 4 months though....not sure why my doc is saying my recovery time will be 6 months. Maybe mine's worse than his was.

That sucks Fletch. Hope you're surgery goes well and you can get on the ice and at least skate sooner than later. Congrats on the new addition to the family though.
