kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 What do you guys use? I'm going to get satellite radio for my car and am trying to decide between the two. Are there advantages/disadvantages to each? Looks like XM has some commercials, while Sirius is completely commercial free.

kovalchuk71 212 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I don't like listening to sports on the radio really, so that does not matter.
cxo 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 The commercials are only on a select few channels however, for XM. I hate satellite radio altogether, but when I had XM, what I didn't care for is the lack of uncensored channels. I wish you could have it as an option when you buy your subscription, whether you want stations censored for your crumb snatchers, or if you'd rather not have anything censored. I'm not sure if Sirius is the same way, but that was the main complaint I had. Why have this type of radio if it's going to be the same as commercial radio? They offer a slightly broader range of tunes, but just not enough in my opinion. As far as pluses for XM, the comedy stations were actually really good, as well as the news/talk stations, if you're into that sort of thing.
budro727 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I have heard great things on both, but eventually they will be one together. :P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM/Sirius_merger
Rustpot 1 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I don't like listening to sports on the radio really, so that does not matter. It's not just game play-by-play, they have several dedicated NHL channels that constantly have discussion, latest news, etc.I liked XM. There are a few channels that play music I like, they have kid-friendly stations, etc etc.The comedy was pretty good, but if a comic comes on that is telling racist or potty jokes you're stuck with them for the next 5 minutes or so. I ended up buying a bunch of stand-up cds for the car ride.
chk hrd 164 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I have both, my wife's car has sirius, mine has XM (it came with it). XM has more channels and the NHL. Sirius has Howard Stern. Other than that they are pretty much the same. I find that even though I have a 100+ channels I only listen to a few of them
BruinsFanRI 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2008 I have Sirius. I love the product but the people in their customer service department must take the short bus to work. They are horrendous!! I've had to deal with them a few times and each experience has been more painful than the last. Can any XM subscribers comment on their customer service? One nice thing with Sirius is that you can add extra receivers for half price. You can get a plan with a friend or two and each will save a few bucks off the monthly subscription price.

BackinAction 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 I've had sirius for just over 2 years and love it. I had xm first because my car came with a 3 mos. trial subscription. I think the music and talk shows are better with Sirius.Xm wins out for nhl games. But, Sirius has CBC's Hockey Night In Canada on channel 122 from 4-6 PM ET and replay from 6-8. Perfect for my drive home from work.

Gummer12 134 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Sportser 5 FTW... Large Brilliant Display, Game alerts, Song/Artist alerts, Nice thin design compared to the Sportster Replay I had before which got Really Hot!. the 5 still gets warm but not as hot as the Replay did. Boombox is a great accessory, the remote works wonders while driving. Plus you can get the Best of XM, and get all the hockey games you can handle.
Big Glove Save 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Our trial period just ended on XM and my wife nearly insists that I subscribe again. She listens to radio - mix, pop radio - probably a total of 30 minutes a day but travels by plane often. In my opinion, there are a few stations that somehow compress the signal and the audio is like poor mp3 quality. The music she listens to can be found on at least three radio stations in our market. She is one to somewhat enjoy the heavy rotation of songs of today's "hottest hits" even though she scarcely remembers the artists' names. So XM called to ask if we would reconsider renewing our subscription at a rate of $5 a month for six months. Sure I look like a cheap jerk and all but I asked if they would consider $3 a month for that same term. The agent said they do not negotiate this offer. Now money is not quite that tight around our house but I don't like small things to add up to bigger problems either. I was trying to cut our expenses this last quarter so we could help charities more this winter. I have the particular advantage of having thousands of albums in my collection. Even $5 a month for a limited time for music or all the things XM has to offer just does not impress me that much. But my wife may have other demands obviously. Gummer12 134 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Oh without a doubt...Easy mounting depends on your car, and the method of your install. I have a little cubby hole in front of my shifter in my console, so I bought an aftermarket universal mounting kit and installed it there. It was an awkward install cuz of the angle I had to screw into the faceplate. The hardest part is running the antenna wire cleanly, which I recommend setting it in your front or rear window dash. I've went through 3 Antennas mounting it outside at $30 a pop. The suction cup mount they provide, I'm not a fan of. Never held well IMO. But those problems you'll have with both units. The display and features of the sportster definitely outweigh the added cost.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 My car kit has a magnetic antenna and that thing is solid as a rock
Gummer12 134 Report post Posted October 30, 2009 as were mine, and after about a year, they quit working, and Directional travel became important. Like it would work going North/South, but wouldn't work going East/West. But sometimes it would reverse. Put on new antenna..no problems...till it started again. Now I have it inside...No problems for over a year now.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Once I'm sure they are going to be around for a while, I'm going to get one of the OEM internal boxes they make for my car.
