Breaking To Many Sticks

Recommended Posts

I am getting really upset party because now I’m broke but because Im just really unlucky I guess. Ive broken 6 sticks in the last 2 weeks. I think that’s like a record. Im not even that hard on them, they just break when people fall on them after Ive hit them or something along those lines. I treat my sticks really nice too, but Im on the ice 6-7 times a week.

Sticks that I broke in the last 2 weeks in order:

Pro Stock RBK 7 K

Pro Stock RBK 7 K

Easton Pro Stock ST 100 flex

Sherwood 7000 woodie 100 flex

Easton Classic woodie 95 flex

Sherwood Momentum RM 7 95 flex

Same thing I was going to say. Giving and receiving slashes is what causes most sticks to break. I've been using some of my sticks for three years, because I keep my legs and arms inside the ride at all times.....

Being a hockey parent, I have looked into this extensively. Hockey sticks are made of basically glue and carbon fiber (thread). Sometimes there is some kevlar fiber too. The glue holds the fiber in place, and the fiber provides the light stiffness that we all crave!

Unfortunately, the fiber itself is quite brittle. If you took one and tried to bend it, it would snap in half like a piece of uncooked spaghetti.

The failure mechanism appears to be, someone hacks at your shaft, a number of the fibers crack, and then as you use the stick for shooting and stickhandling, you keep flexing the area at that crack. More and more fibers fail, and after enough of them crack, the stick fails completely. I say this based on seeing very small chinks in my kids stick, and then having to go buy a new one after a couple of games when it snaps in two!

The only way I can think of making the sticks last longer is to not let them get dinged up! Obviously take care of them when not in use, no slamming doors on them, etc. The only thing I have ever seen that would seem to help during actual play is a thick tape that covers the lower shaft and spreads out the force of a hacking stick:

Try some and tell me if it worked.

As far as aluminum, I think I bought up all of the remaining easton aluminum shafts around 5 years ago. Have not seen any since, and I did cry when the last one of them broke!

Start buying wood sticks.

My friends parents got tired of paying for all these composite sticks when he would break them in about 2 weeks. So they decided that they would buy him wood sticks until he stopped breaking them so fast. Now he has some more composites again and he babies them like no one I have ever seen before.

This might not be something that would work for you, but it worked for him so I thought I would pass it on.

Find an old aluminum shaft- those things were tanks.
Those things scare me!

why?? my riend has a Easton T-Flex (slvr/blu) and I'm amazed at the abuse it's taken. not sure when it came out but it's still going strong

I've had the displeasure of seeing someone literally impaled on one of those things.

Perhaps a fluke or odd coincidence, but it stuck with me nonetheless.

He did live and is well by the way.

+1 for the aluminum. I've never seen anyone break one.

The closet thing to breaking was when I was using an Easton Aluminum shaft that felt like it was 45-50 flex. I was firing rockets with that thing before it got an 1 inch crack where the end plug meets the shaft. Ended up cutting off the cracked part and giving it to my friend's little sister.

One stick that might work for you is the Mission fuel Ti. I've never used one and I don't know anyone who has, but I use a normal mission fuel and I love it. Also with the 60 day warranty, why not give it a try?

Sure they are hard to break, but they did warp like crazy.

back in my day when I couldn't have multiple good sticks I always had cheaper ones for my "back-ups" that were similar to my good one, just well cheaper and more durable that I would use in practices and pick-up. It seemed to preserve them for a longer period of time, and some sticks just aren't for some people, maybe try some different combinations maybe a 2 piece or something.

They are still around. Every shop I've bene into has at least 2-3 random aluminum shafts.

....or you could not steal from the companies. There is a reason fraud is a bad thing, and a crime when it comes to most circumstances.
