Helmet ear covers

Recommended Posts

It seems like it would make sense that the holes in a helmet's ear covers ought to line up with the ear canals, but I was looking up and down my bench the other day and noticed that they didn't line up like that on any of my teammates' helmets. Usually, the plastic of the bottom part of the cover lay over the ear canal.

Seemed to me like that would possibly interfere with one's hearing a bit, but then I started to wonder whether maybe they were designed to protect the ear canal like that. I tried to see what pros' helmets were doing, but most of them seem to remove the covers.

Misfit helmets or intentional design feature ?

The pad that is on the bottom of the ear cover is there to give a little bit of comfort. The hole will allow sound through whether or not it's over your ear canal.

I've worn my helmet with and without them and I didn't notice much of a difference it was just easier to remove my helmet with ne hand and to get to my ear to scratch and whatnot.

I only keep mine on snce they keep the backings to the temple screws in place for my J-clips.

I don't hear any difference with the ear covers on or off - this is on my Itech HC100.

I just removed them for use with my visor - it just looks better :)

yeah, remove those...

If the league requires HECC/CSA approved helmets the ear covers need to be on.

They don't do much, keep you from getting hit in the ear, why not leave them on?

I can think of 14 stitches, I mean reasons why I now keep mine on!!!

The stitches were nothing compared to the $1,500 bill I got.

if i were in your shoes, i could probably think of 1500 reasons to keep them on ;]

If I was trying to look like my childhood idol I'd have blue holders on my 301s, with an aluminum stick and have 3" extensions on my cuff. But oddly enough, I'd just look like Ryan Smyth.

Several pros do use them, but then again they get paid upwards of millions of dollars where as I pay to play.

I'll only forgo protective equipment if it's a real hindrance. Like a mouth guard, I just can't stop salivating or talk well when I'm wearing one.

Ear covers, cage, etc all stay on as players can't control sticks or pucks as well as the pros.

No mouthguard, no neckguard, no ear covers, but I rock everything else including cage. It's a tradeoff because like somebody mentioned, I value comfort and breathability (literally).

I still say the most insane thing is to play sans shoulder pads, but just my opinion.

The only time ear protection has bothered me was when I used to wear a Jofa 390, because they were part of the helmet (not removable) and sat right up against my ears. The padding was too thick, and it made the helmet hot and uncomfortable. On regular helmets (I now use a Jofa 690 and a NBH 4500), they don't bother me at all, so I leave them there.

I have mine removed too. I think the odds of an ear injury is low enough that I can just take them out and not have something stopping me from hearing properly.

I'm glad I got that shock doctor mouthguard last weekend. had a game last night where I got elbowed pretty nice in my mouth, would have a much worse injury that the slight bruising that I have right now without it!

Who does wear ear guards in the NHL besides Malkin and Crosby. I dont really pay attention but that's all I've seen.

I believe Patrick Kane wears them. It seems like personal safety is only a concern with younger players, since nobody over 25 seems to wear the ear covers, and young players all seem to wear visors now.

Visors are mandatory since the return of play after the lockout. They're being grandfathered in.

Same thing happened to me when I took them off. I loved the better hearing I got in the two games I managed, then took a deflected slapper right in the ear

No, it's very true that they're trying to grandfather them in, though I am wrong that they're absolutely mandatory. My mistake.

I know Jussi Jokinen leaves them on. Can't think of any others that haven't been mentioned already.
