Custom Grafs in Toronto

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting custom Grafs. I like my current skates (609s), but still feel like the fit could be a bit better. I have no idea which skate I should really be in, and couldn't even tell you what my foot shape is like - even as I look at them now.

I live in Toronto. The LHS I visit most often is a Graf dealer, so all things being equal I would like to give them my business. However, because of my ignorance about my foot shape, I want to go to whomever is the best and most experienced fitter who is reasonably close. I was even thinking about driving as Detroit because I heard there is a pretty good shop there :), but decided against it in case any issues arise later. I can make the drive once but not more than that.

Can anyone in the area recommend particular people I should ask to see ? Or will all this be handled by the rep, and if so, is it irrelevant which dealer I pick ?

Also, I read the recent thread about custom skates and others. While most of that discussion seemed to center around NBH skates, is this also a bad time to get custom Grafs ? I am not in a real rush, but once I place that order, I sure will be !

Go into any Graf dealer, and tell them you want custom Grafs. take in your old skates for them to look at as well. They will trace your bare feet and have you try on a few different models to see which boot has the correct depth for your foot and to get the length correct. I use the tracing more to see what kind of width and shape your foot is. Make sure to have them pin point the correct length by trying on skates, and the model. Put on a boot, lace it up, kick your heel back into the heel counter, then unlace the boot without moving your foot in it. lay a straight edge across the eyelet stays and make sure your foot isn't either sticking out past them or way too far below them. Our dealers are very good skate fitters. Asking questions as they fit you is a very good way to learn how a boot should be chosen.

Another vote for Just Hockey - got my skates there and they are very professional people who know what they're talking about!

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I am familiar with most of the stores listed. I spend lots of money at Duke's and Just Hockey. I've been in Majer several times - never had the occasion to buy anything there yet, but found their staff helpful. I did know that all three are Graf dealers.

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of specific people at any of these or other stores who were especially good at fitting customs in particular, or if it really doesn't matter. This is the most money I will ever have spent on skates, so I want to do this right. But since I imagine this is going to take a bit of time, I also don't want to waste my or anyone else's time shopping for a fitter. If someone did a great job of fitting you with customs, let me know his name, by PM if you want.

Also, since GrafPro recommends trying on a few boot models, is this is a good or bad time to do this - I have smaller feet and wonder whether it is likely stores will have my sizes in the various candidate boots.

Thanks again guys.

Well,

I used to work at Just Hockey and I have to say they have some of the same staff from when i started like 10 years ago.

I would say that Just Hockey would be the best to go to.

As long as they don't put on holders that stick out past the end of the skate (as they've done to others) they're fine.
