Patty WAH, goalie son in a fight... video link

Recommended Posts

It was a superb article indeed. I didn't initially realize he was full owner as well as coach. He definitely should've gotten more than 5 games...

The problem is we don't have enough background.

Maybe these teams had some brawls earlier in the season/series/game, so the refs warned the coaches that any player who fights would be tossed. That would explain the white goalie refusing to fight, as well as Roy telling his son to go start a fight. Maybe someone on the white team put one of the red players out of the game earlier with a two-hander across the helmet. That might explain the white goalie not wanting to join the fight, although I agree he should have tried to protect the player who appeared to be unconscious.

(Unlike some of you, I'm not going to back up my teammates 100% in all circumstances. If someone commits an act that would be criminal anywhere else in North America, I'll defend them enough to keep them out of the hospital, but I'm looking for new friends thereafter.)

The thing that always gets to me is the rules allow people to nail others -- you can send someone sprawling on a legal hip check -- yet too many idiots resort to slashing, spearing, slew footing, etc. There's no point to any of those moves, other than to try to hurt someone. And those are the type of plays that lead to brawls, particularly when the score is lopsided.

Again, we have no idea what the background is. Maybe Roy's team is no more than thugs on skates. Maybe the white team is no more than thugs on skates.

Did anyone notice in the fight against Osgood, Roy was being held back by the rferee *L*. Only one french asshole wasn't telling him to go down and beat the hell out of some guy. I agree. He definately didn't win either of those fights!

Those two teams have a lonnng history together. In fact, Chicoutimi vs Quebec rivalry is bigger than anything in the NHL. Those rivalry are always bigger when their local anyway.

There were incidents in about every game those 2 teams have played in the last 3 years. The fans are crazy too. Patrick Roy may easily be the most hated individual in the Chicoutimi area. Everybody wants to piss him off, they all want a piece of him. Mr. Wah has some special security when he goes to Chicoutimi.

And i forgot to add: there's a criminal investigation going on about Jo Roy's action which is totally ridiculous IMO.

I don't think this incident was severe enough to warrant a criminal investigation, but it's that attitude that causes elite athletes to feel they should be given a free pass -- including outside of the game.

My understanding is that the white goalie is one of if not the best goaltender in the league, and Jon Roy is the back-up and basically one of the worst goaltenders in the league. I'm sure the white coach had instructed his goalie at some point to never get into a fight in order to prevent injury, but still he should have done something.

Great, great, great editorial about the incident from writer Gare Joyce on ESPN.com.

I had no idea that fans actually threw trash on Patty after the game. Just what he deserves.

And we come on, I think we definitely should care about this. This has been broad casted probably worldwide now. Although it shouldn't be, this is pretty big news now.

great editorial, i agree with it completly

She wants to have anti-fighting proposals, come on its apart of the sport. Well since we are going to change something that belongs in the game why not make all the people in Qubece speak English instead of French, or lets get rid of Canadian bacon or how about making it illegal to score goals? It just wouldn't make sense

Lighten up, Francis. This is the same kneejerk reaction that always occurs after a high profile incident like the brawl in question. Nothing will come of it.

That is crazy, they are really blowing this out of porportion and they really have no right putting pressure on the QMJHL to have some fighting rules in place, things like this are going to happen in hockey.

its sad that these things do happen but its part of the sport and to create rules trying to take it away will in turn hurt other aspects of the game

I believe there is somewhere close to 2 million adult hockey players in North America, 99.8% of whom have never fought while playing as adults. I think it's safe to say that this sport has quite a lot of appeal even when there isn't gratuitous violence.

Follow up on the incident by "Hockey Quebec", some new rules...

Quebec moves to curb hockey violence

Among the new rules:

Players who fight, instigate, or jump into an on-ice brawl as a third combatant will be suspended for two games on a first offence.

A second offence puts the player out for four games and means a trip before a disciplinary committee.

A third offence means an indefinite suspension.

If the fight happens in the last five minutes of play or overtime, the players involved will be penalized an additional game and their coaches will also be suspended for one game.

Interesting how they are making the coaches responsible via a possible suspension for them as well.
