NHL fashion police?

You know the tinted visor that has become part of Alex Ovechkin's trademark look? The NHL wants to outlaw it.

You know the jersey tuck made famous by Wayne Gretzky, and now adopted by players including Jaromir Jagr Jaromir Jagr ? The NHL wants to outlaw that, too.

Indeed, the NHL wants to institute a uniform code much like the NFL's costume police enforce. We're told the push - which also would prohibit players from wearing long strings on their pants; any color tape on their socks other than the predominant team color, any color skate laces other than white or the predominant team color; and from zipping or cutting open the inner part of their pants - is actually part of a larger agenda to grant Reebok exclusivity on apparel within the locker room from 90 minutes before a game until 90 minutes after one.

The grunge look favored by Ovechkin? Gone. Individualism? Gone.

It's the one-size-fits-all operation.

Dear god, what is the reason for this ridiculousnesses? The game would lose so much individuality that every player brings to the game. This would just hurt the game more and more, why can't they see that.

Because that has really killed the NFL.

There was talk that cutting the legs was going to be banned coming out of the lockout. RBK was pushing that and no tuck jerseys with the edge system. Hell, they were trying to require RBK pants in addition to the jerseys.

Dangling laces could be considered a safety issue, the rest is bullshit.

Cutting/unzipping the inner legs is also a safety issue. I always forget the coach that outlawed that practice for his skaters a couple of years back.

It's also against USA Hockey rules

Next step, ban the playoff beard. If not everyone can grow one, then it won't be uniformed across the league.

You can thank patrick kane, nicklas backstrom and phil kessel for that :o

If visors aren't mandatory, how can they mandate what kind you have to wear?

All new draft picks have to wear them, don't they?

Not yet...only at the AHL level...unless something has changed in the last few days.

I don't get it... the NFL allows tinted visors.

But they have rules about shoes and towels...The NFLPA would probably argue that playing outdoors makes the tinted visor a useful (if not necessary) part of the equipment. Obviously, no accounting for teams that play indoors.

I could see it if the point was to make the player faces more visible, but that doesn't seem to be the focus of this push. Then you're going to have players who use the tinted or yellow visors for medical reasons. If the NHL doesn't allow them, there could easily be an ADA lawsuit.

You have to have a prescription for the tinted ones in the NFL.

I always thoguht it was more about just looking meaner than serving an actual purpose.

I'm sure it is, but you still need a prescription. I heard once the issue with the tinted visors is that medical staff want to be able to see into your eyes in the case of a head/neck injury.

Banning the tucked in jersey would be one of the dumber rule changes of all time if you ask me. Sure, go ahead and outlaw the defining equipment feature of the greatest player ever, makes perfect.

Yes, you tell the trainer you get migranes and viola... tinted visor. Not incredibly difficult considering players experience helmet-to-helmet contact 6 days a week.

These seem to all be anti-Ovechkin rules - no tinted visors, long pant laces, or yellow skate laces. Makes sense. Take the most identifiable traits of the league's most marketable player, and only player that appears to have an actual personality; and outlaw them.

Thats why my high school dose not allow tinted visors in foot ball or hockey.

Problem is the NHL doesn't really market Ovechkin. Please note the league's chosen poster boy doesn't violate any of these proposed rules.

Next it will be that players can't put THEIR OWN NAME on the cuff of the gloves...they will have to put the team name and their number...that's it.

Oh wait, that's how Crosby does it!
