Best way to practice off-ice?

Recommended Posts

As the title says :)

Atm i'm doing..

. 15 mins of figure 8 stickhandling round two objects

. Stickhandle in my inlines for 30 mins a day

. Play hockey three days a week (Two one hour sessions, one is 1.5 hours)

. Go public skating twice/three times a week

In addition to this, i'm starting inline pretty soon. But is there any other way to get better at hockey, whilst not on the ice?

looks like you have stickhandling all covered so maybe shooting on a net. Just practice picking corners and stuff like that, work on shots that you feel need improvement. I like to shoot at my net in my back yard and then practice my saucer passes to get the pucks back where i shot from.

I used to do that much practice a day, then i noticed that it wasn't benefitting me as much because I wasn't enjoying it.

pick up another sport. one its probably more fun for you and 2 it will work on things that you don't get to practice much in hockey (i.e. concentration and mental toughness if u choose an individual sport)

+1

Playing other sports will make you more athletic (one would hope), and you get to have some fun while you're at it.

Weightlifting and what not will help you.. but going from 3 times a week to once a week in the summer, i find my hands really suffer. Some form of stick handling practice would be good, just to keep the feel i would think. But you don't want to burn yourself out from hockey at the same rate.

dont think you'll need to do the public skating since you're already playing hockey. If its for conditioning just play another sport it'll help add some variety.

really? i thought that skating would be the need to be the 'most focused' aspect of the three.

It is if you're wearing full equipment and doing drills I don't think you'll be getting very much out of a public skate.

SKATING if you are going the public skate route speed drills are tough, esp with large crowds. Focus on certain details that you think you need to work on

longer strides, more knee bend, balance (inside and outside edges)

STICKHANDLING there is a DVD set by Sean Skinner that was awesome but if you dont want to pay the US NTDP put out some good off-ice drills USA NTDP Drills

Public skating is great for working on inside/outside edges. Those drills are very slow, but strive for smooth technical perfection.

It is also possible to find a corner and practice your pivots when there is a break in the throng.

You are not going to do any speedskating there!

Get an Ice Pad and get a cheap stick with the same or clone curve as your stick now and just shoot pucks even if your a relly good shooter this will help alot, it's probably the only reason I will make varstiy next season as a sopohmore

Oh also you may want to run at a local park if you have the time or if you have the money go to some big time power skating camps in the summer, they helped my speed OODLES lol thats a funny word......

go out on the street

set up a bunch of pucks and stick handle with tennis balls, gives you a more cushioned control because of the bounce, shoot tennis balls aswell, same motion, helps me loads, shoot any where between 200 and 400 every nice day after school.
