Norris Trophy

Recommended Posts

Well the this years three nominees are;

Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins (second nomination)

Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings (ninth nomination within the last ten seasons)

Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames (first nomination)

I think it likely that it will be given it to Lidstrom again, but if I had a vote mine would be for Chara, (and yeah, I am from Bruin territory [New Hampshire]:P) , but I like to think that I am still impartial.

Opinions? Picks?

Chara had the least help of the three, and meant the most to his team. He played a rediculous amount of ice time, and had good numbers while playing against the opposing team's top line.

Chara? Haha, he got dangled like a fool in Game 7 against Montreal...I don't care what happens, that is NEVER happening to Nik Lidstrom.

Unless it's an attempt to get both a western and canadian team requirements filled with one guy, I have no idea why Phaneuf is even on the list. I still think he's one of the most overrated players in the league.

I just think Lidstrom is too good to let this one pass him by. He is the most composed, confident and well-rounded defensman in the league. Yes he's on a better team, but 1)thats not to his fault, what can he do about it and 2)he has alot to do with that, he makes everyone around him better, he's a winner.

The league is trying to hype him up as the next superstar defenseman. Doesn't hurt to get him nominated for the Norris already, even though he won't win it.

Yeah, but aren't you supposed to be good in your own end to win the Norris? He gets a majority of his points on the PP and throws some really big hits, that require him to go running way out of position, but is not even close to what you should be to win the Norris.

Its much easier to highlight the hits and goals than it is good defense. I'd much rather watch Phaneuf than a Volchenkov or Witt, even though they are better defensemen. I know the idea has been thrown around a lot, but they really just need to make a Bobby Orr award and that will end this type of debate.

the only way lidstrom doesnt win it is if he turns it down, which is not possible. he has been the best for the last decade or so, and will be until he retires. hes too smart for everyone else on the ice.

i agree lidstrom will win - but i'm kind of suprised that there was pretty much no mention of gonchar. his defense was improved this year and he still put up big offensive numbers.

my third pick would be sheldon souray. j/k

I used to think that way, but I'm not sure that I would be in favor of an award that ends up going to a guy that has limited offensive skills. At least the Norris winner has to be better than average at both ends and spectacular at one end. As much as I like Lidstrom, Bourque was more entertaining to watch because of his hits in addition to his stellar play at both ends of the ice. If someone like Phaneuf wins for making highlight reel hits and giving up odd man breaks, my opinion may very well change.

Zubov. He has better vision than Lids, IMO.

Come on, now. We all know Zubov is a poor man's Lidstrom.

i was going to say the nominees should be zubov, lidstrom, and gonchar, with the win going to nik.

As much as I love Zubov, he missed way too many games this year to even be considered for the award.
