Anyone ever have this happen with a carbster?

Recommended Posts

Tonight in warmups, some stupid bastard who I should have murdered decided it was a good idea to stride into a slap shot when I was collecting the pucks off the net and getting everything set up. Got me right off the side of my head. Completely cracked through the carbster shell. Yes, it really really really hurt at the moment it happened. Helmet did its job though. Amazed that a little pain is all that happened to me.

I wouldn't be worried about the helmet.....just give it a nod as you throw it in the trash as to say "thanks bud" and go buy a new helmet. Then go smack that idiot upside the head.

Yeah, that's why I always clean the pucks out from behind the net if I dare to do it =P Just lift it up and swipe em forward. I'm more paranoid than most however. Also, I think anyone on my team would be. Some crazy fuckers.

When I had my Carbster, it never cracked. But the "vents" on the side popped out after my head hitting the ice. Personally I think it's the best helmet ever made for protection. Why do players helmets not have the sweat band feature as well? When I went from my Carbster to my 8k that's the thing I noticed the most... (sweat in my face).

I'll take some macros of it once I charge up my batteries. It is about 1/4" wide by 1" long, broke through the paint, bondo (which is in itself a feat), the first few layers of kevlar, and you see like one last bit of carbon weave in there. Inside is a bit bulged but no visible crack. Biggest tell about this is if you press with your thumbs it feels as soft as a jofa 235 in that spot now.

Long hair = cure for sweat in the eyes.

Haven't had this problem in so long hahah.

Should be interesting to see some pics of this helmet though...

That guy has to buy your cracked helmet-not like it happened in a game. Think he just earned job of picking up pucks for awhile also.

Never seen any helmet crack from a shot.

I've been hit in the back of the legs a couple times at practice and one of our coaches caught a slapper right in the spine. Said his bottom half was tingling for two hours.

I wear my old Carbster as a bike helmet. Gets some strange looks out on the trail but it's light, well ventilated and the sweat band is a beauty. Already saved my ass when I went over the bars.

Took some cam phone ones just now. Will have them up in 5. I feel fine, not foggy at all which is amazing as I never saw it coming. I think the fact I felt the pain was a very good sign actually since with head shots, when they are real bad you usually don't feel anything and before you know it you are in a fetal ball babbling or worse.

Point of impact. A really bad spot to take any head shot. It's a nice, deep groove. I think the fact that it caught the ridge probably saved me from a very serious injury.

Inside of the helmet. The yellow strands are where the kevlar is bulging out. What the crap cam phone isn't showing is the sheer amount of hairline cracks and crazing all around this area that the paint that survived on the outside is hiding. It is mushy soft in the area now.

looks like it worked the way it was designed to... I almost hit one of my team mates in the head yesterday. We were all taking shots at the net, when one of them decided to sprint and get a puck behind the net. He ducked at the last min.

I wonder if Mission would ever come out with something like another carbster... been trying to get one for years, but its always too small or too big on ebay.

Truth be told, the myth of the helmet is somewhat greater than the reality once you use it. It is comfortable and highly protective, but it is a bit heavy, the padding is a bit hard for absorbing the smaller bumps, and the ventilation is basically horrible. It's a great great helmet if you have had head injuries though b/c it is real good at dealing with large impacts. With smaller impacts, I just always felt it stung more than it should have, but that seems to be a problem with all of these helmets with hard padding layers.

I'm rocking an old jofa 390 cosmonaut helmet until I can get my hands on something new.

The molds were lost.
