Adult League Morons

Sorry in advance if anyone gets offended, but I dont see how wearing a cage makes anyone act like an ass and get in fights. Just like how wearing a visor makes you less likely to act like an ass and fight.

You act like an ass if you are an ass. If you acted like an ass and fought with a cage, and then stopped because you wear a visor now and are scared to get hurt, that just makes you an ass that is scared to get hurt. Nothing personal, but it is a personality and sportsmanship issue...not an equipment issue. JMHO

Well said.

The whole visor vs cage thing gets totally blown out of proportion when you're talking about beer league....

It isn't the same as the NHL (a la no visor vs. visor) with the steve downie type "tough guys" because in my beer league I have yet to see an actual fight.

I don't have anything against guys who wear cages in my beer league. In fact, I expect people to. We're talking about guys with kids and careerswith a better chance of winning the lotto then ever playing pro hockey (just to show you how slim it is), why shouldn't you protect your face?

The only difference I notice between cage vs. non cage guys is that the non cages respect where they put their sticks. I wear a visor and the open feeling at first along with getting high sticked from other guys makes you think about how you handle your stick...

Ya, some guys have that attitude where they think they have to play tough guy or think that they're playin pro. Why some people carry that attitude is beyond me. We all have to go to work the next day and none of us are getting paid to play. I had the unlucky first hand experience of a moron in rec league about 2 months ago. A guy checked me from behind (non-contact league) after he got frustrated and plowed me into the boards. I'm 150, 5'4'' and he's at least 100 lbs heavier than me, and 6'. Right now I'm 5 wks out from having ACL and meniscus surgery all because someone lost their temper.

dear jesus.. how could a man goon up on a woman especially in a non contact beer league?? why dont you sue the living hell outta him??

I'd have to disagree with that one. I've had alot of sticks bounce off my cage from guys who where visors or nothing. A douche bag with no respect for the game does not respect where they put thier stick. To me, a cage is just another piece of protection so I can make it through the game and to work the next game. Cages don't make you Superman, supertough a better player or a worse player. If you can't control your stick wearing a visor isn't going to suddenly keep you from getting it up high. Yes, with a visor or no visor you do feel a little more vulnerable, but you are the same player, good or bad.

Not offended, but have you ever played without a cage?

You're right that if you're an ass, you're an ass, but sometimes a cage makes people not realize how vulnerable those without can be to sticks/gloves/elbows up around the face. Not saying it happens to everyone, but the odd guy it certainly does.

I'm not really even talking about fights so much because I think that's totally unacceptable 99.9% of the time in beer league, it's more the little scrums that are ALWAYS going to occur especially in league play where you get idiots with cages on giving someone a face-wash or just generally getting their sticks/hands up in people's faces.

This is one of the few instances justifying fighting in men's league--a guy hits from behind and injures a woman on your team.

Does jawing or yapping even have a place in adult hockey? Nobody's getting paid or getting scouted. I understand there's a certain loss of respect if you're running your mouth wearing a full cage, but it's beer league for cripes sake. Is it a part of the game at all skill levels and ages, or is it just regular guys trying to be tough?

I have to agree with you. I work hard not to lip off at hockey and it is hard work because it goes against my normal inclination to be a mouthy bastard. But really there is no reason for it.

A little playful trash talk between friends is fine or a "keep the stick down, I value my good looks" is one thing, but jawing with some sort of purpose is stupid and doesn't have a place in an adult for fun league.

haha...

or 'average guy vs linebacker' syndrome

See and I assumed this was pretty even match up - 5'10" versus 5'11".

155 skinny guy versus 285 fat dude. You must have a better class of adult hockey players, not too many 5'11" 285 lb ripped individuals in my leagues. Thank god!

Glad you're not offended :)

Yes, I played without a cage a couple of times back in my 20's.

Just didn't feel comfortable with the risk.

You're right that if you're an ass, you're an ass, but sometimes a cage makes people not realize how vulnerable those without can be to sticks/gloves/elbows up around the face. Not saying it happens to everyone, but the odd guy it certainly does.

Agreed that people who wear cages my not be as aware as to how vunerable others without cages may be. But that really is the crux of my point. There are always going to be people that arent aware of your cageless vunerabilities....and even if everyone on the ice was aware, it still doesnt protect you agaist the errant and/or accidental stick/elbow/puck, etc. My point is that there is inherrent danger in the sport, and even more so without a cage. There really is no rational reaon to not wear one, and if one doesnt, one must accept the risks.

Im not talking about fights either. Im talking about the accidents that can occurr in even the best behaved and innocent games. The danger is just too obvious and the risks to things like eyesight are just too high. I just dont see the reward being even in the same balpark as the risk. But again, as long as one TRULY understands the risk, they are free to do as they wish. I just do not think it is the cage wearers responsibility to change their game (as long as it is played within the rules) to accommodate someone who willingly takes a safety risk.

All just my opinion though. :)

The man/woman thing is irrelevant. Once you step on the ice you are a hockey player and gender makes no difference. For every incident where an innocent woman gets run there are one hundred where the woman is spearing or slashing an innocent man. Those women deserve payback, just as any man would.

**Disclaimer**

I am not saying that Sabby47 deserved to get hit, simply that your reaction is way over the top.

I'm pretty sure every woman that plays in a coed league wants nothing more than to be treated like one of the guys.

It was my second shift of the game and I'd never touched the guy. He was pissed off because I made a move on him and he apparently couldn't handle it since he had ran a different girl a few months back during a development class scrimmage. I guess I was lucky my boss(hockey director) was reffing the gm and when he called the guy the next day he admitted that he meant to hit me. He's not allowed to play again until he apologizes and he hasn't been able to do that so I guess that just shows what type of person he is- on and off the ice.

Sounds like the guy has some issues and shouldn't be playing until he sorts them out.
