Just saw the pics now....wow, Matt. Good luck with the recovery. Did Kurtis Foster have the same injury as you?

Walking with just a cane now. I can walk around the house with no cane or crutches.

slowly getting better... not fast enough.

Hopefully you have either a pimped cane with brass and cool engravings on it, or you can at least pull a sword out of one end of it. ;)

It may not expedite your healing.....but it would certainly make ya smile. :)

Can turn one of your old busted sticks into a cane ^.^

Glad to hear you're feeling a little better. One step closer to being back on the ice.

What I'm looking for is a cane with a flask and a sword in it. Till then I have settled for a basic chrome one. I'm 6'5 so its hard to find nice ones for people my height.

Very similar, yes. I fell pretty much the same way ( from what i can remember ) But I also broke my knee cap into 8 or so pieces ( its kinda hard to see from the xrays ). My upper leg feels fine-ish now, but my knee cap is still giving me a lot of pain and problems. It always feels like my knee is going to hyper extend as well, which is not a nice feeling.

if you look at this pic

http://i33.tinypic.com/2wltr9f.jpg ( im not gonna post it, its huge )

you can kinda see how its in pieces but generally all in the same place. i can feel my knee cap now, its all lumpy :)

Seems like this was a very painful experience. Never knew you could suffer this kind of injury from going knee first into the boards. Sorry to hear about it and I hope you make a good recovery. Gonna be a long process but hopefully in the end youll be able to get back onto your skates and start playing again.

And just wondering, what kind of gear you were using when this happened? Think any other models could have possibly helped?

funny you should ask

I had been wearing bauer 3000's for a long time, but the knee cap was all busted up and taped back together and the straps were falling off and they were in need of replacing a long time ago.

so, THAT DAY i went out and bought a pair of RBK 3k's and that was the first game i played in them...

Wow..That must of hurt quite a bit..

but, i saw your pics, and you have like rods in your legs, near your knee..

does that prevent you from bending your knee?

for like ever?

Matt, how's the healing going on your end so far?

Had my check up yesterday, /surgeon/doc says everything is healing up nicely and on time and that the swelling should be gone pretty soon in the knee area. He said hockey should wait for 1 year from injury time ( so.. mid may 2009 ) Whereas my doctor, not a ortopedic specialist, said i should not play hockey again. Well, I was anyway so now I just feel a bit better about it. :D He also said he is not going to take out any of the 'hardware' unless it starts causing problems, which he said shouldn't happen.

There is a rod going from hip to knee. And screws and wires in my kneecap. I can move my knee now and everything is seemingly healing up good. My leg feels fine but my knee cap still gives me some pain ( and its all lumpy to touch )

So, to answer your question, the rod goes near my knee but doesnt exit my femur. So there is no blocked movement from this. Its all inside the bone.

:)

Good to hear that you'll eventually be back, Matty. I guess you should start stockpiling new gear now  .

You know it. Once the paycheques start rolling in I'll be looking at stocking up on some new gear. No league fee's = new gear. I would've already had some new stuff, but 3 months off of work eats through a lot of money :(

oh well... time to hit up ebay soon. mmmmmm.

Congrats man, looking back through the thread thats quite an ordeal you've been through!

Just take it slow and I'm sure you'll be fine.

On a side note, is there a correct way to slide into the boards? I've had the misfortune of doing it a few times and I'm always trying to think what I should do (curl into a ball, flail wildly to try and slow down) - assuming I have time to think up a plan!

You want to spread the impact along as much of your body as you can. Never go head first and try to avoid going feet first if possible.
