injury # 2. broken hip. WTF

Recommended Posts

First off....horrible accident, and I hope that you recover to the best of your potential.

For a touch of inspiration, after my second knee surgery my surgeons and team doctors told me I would never compete again (cycling) and have a "severely limited outcome" with regards to the rest of my day to day activities. Truth be told, I no longer compete in cycling, but I am still able to play hockey and do just about everything that I was doing pre-op....just at about 85% of what I used to be able to.

My point....doctors know statistics, but there is no statistic for the power of personal motivation and heart to get back to doing what you love.

Best of luck!!

I am guessing you are pretty young like most guys here. Your age will be a benefit in recovery. I had a slipped disc in my lower back in 1987 with sciatica to my toes for a over a year. I didn't play hockey for 15 months. Imagine being a hockey equipment buyer who hasn't played in 15 months because your back is a wreck. Slowly but surely I made it back. So will you. You will have a few good days followed by a few bad days. Remember the good days when you are having a bad day. Keep a journal so you can track your progress. Your mind will play tricks on you and you think you will never get back. You will. It is all about will power, determination, and desire. Read Lance Armstrong's book and trust me, that will be motivation enough to come out healthy on the other side.

I feel for you man....good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

One piece of advice: GET A SECOND OPINION.

This isnt a knock against you, your doctor, or your situation. It is ALWAYS a good iea to get a second, or even a third opinion when it concerns your health and well-being. Definitely look into seeing a specialist.

Again....GOOD LUCK!

Can't wait to see these pictures

Haha, well, after they cut off my gear and i saw my femur was pointing towards my right leg. (creating a v shape of my entire femur).. i demanded someone (my little brother) go get pictures. If I am going to go through 7 or 8 months of rehab, i want some damn pictures of the reason.

also, i was in shock, so it seemed like a good idea.

I still have the xrays of my wrist when I dislocated and broke it in high school. It was fairly deformed and while the xrays are cool to have, I certainly didn't want a picture of it.

To each his own, but I have a hard time looking at that kind of stuff.

yeah man. Like I said, I was in shock at this point, at on some kind of laughy gas. my brother was here today and i couldnt bring myself to look at the picture.

Yesterday was a rough day. Wasnt being careful, dropped my leg, passed out and went into shock. I turned a not so nice color of blue and I was sweating and shaking. It was pretty scary. today, I just kicked it in bed. My knee feels good. if the knee felt bad or more swollen or whatever, i wouldve called my dr. but it was not, so i did not. I just need to be careful. I've never had to be careful with my body so this is a huge adustment.

Best of luck for a full recovery. I'm sure you'd love to be able to play again, but a healthy and regular everyday life is more important.

I agree. That being said I had ACL recon on my right knee and when my friend drove me home from the hospital we had to make a stop at the pro shop because my new Graf skates had arrived. Getting back on the ice was a huge motivator for my rehab, and while your injuries are way worse than a busted ACL, if you want to play again then decide right now that you will and focus on that.

Best of luck to you!!

best of luck man. Sorry to hear about the 'rough day' also.

I remember last year going feet first into the boards, hyperextended my knee, broke some bones in the ankle and partial tear of the achilles. Doesnt sound like it compares though. Best wishes.

My friend got an injury like your including emergency surgery and a permanent rod in his leg. He was also told that playing hockey again would not be a good idea but is back playing after little over a year and a half of recovery. I hope everything works out for you and that you can play hockey once again some day. Good luck on the recovery!

Well put.

I second what everyone else has already said. You seem to have a good attitude about it, that will go a long way.

that's why doctors are "practicing" medicine - they actually know very little especially when it comes to sports related injuries

I've yet to see anyone who really wanted to come back & wasn't able to despite what the doctors might have said!

I wish you speedy recovery - get well!

now get the damn pictures already! ;)

Pretty sick, we all want to see pics of someone's injury! Anyway, like everyone else, I hope you have a full recovery AND play again!

the guy who did my knee operation is ' the sports injury knee guy' who just happened to be on call that night, otherwise there is a quite a lineup. Im pretty sure he said something as well, but i was pretty goofed up on morphine.

You are one lucky SOB - that's fantastic.

My finger got repaired by a guy I'd been drinking with the night before... didn't go so well...
