sharpenings

whats the best places you've had your skates sharpened at? I recently ordered skates from JR's shop, and he sharpened mine, and I have to agree with how he brags, he is the king. best sharpening job i've had in ages. By the way, if you're looking to order anything thats not in stock in stores, talk to JR, best service i've had, and this isnt an ass-kissing post, its just plain true.

How can you tell if its a good sharpening? Just by the way it feels when you skate, or is there something you can look for?

One thing you can look for is if the edges are even and the hollow is smooth. On the ice, you'll have a nice smooth glide and when turning or stopping your skates won't feel choppy.

JR - Clean your damn sharpener

Actually I wasn't working. The pic was for promotional purposes only.

I keep it clean...LOL...

For those who asked, you need to check for squareness (level edges), burrs and the finish. A lot of people leave waves, chatters and even burn the blade. All signs of a bad sharpener.

I only let 3 people sharpen my skates. My dad, my coach kal, and dave the guy that runs a hockey shop about 40 min away. There all very good at sharpening.

I don't trust any of the locals anymore. I know three guys with bent steel that the locals never noticed or brought to their attention.

Ooh, let's have a sharpening-off!

Honestly, a good sharpening is not too hard to achieve...just take your time and understand the concept. Too many people just clamp the skate to the holder and whirl away without understanding what they're trying to accomplish.

So true. Plus, you'll have shops where a guy who really doesn't know what he's doing will be training other guys who soon won't really know what they're doing either.

As for the Wheelers that do my skates, the senior Wheeler's brother worked with the Bruins way back in the day. This guy does one of the best sharpenings around and his son seems to have picked up just as well.

Skate sharping is an art form and takes time to perfect. I know this because i got a job at Warwicks in Port Huron MI where we are known for the best skate sharping in town. Ive done about 20 pair now and no one has come back to bitch about me. Im just now starting to learn how to profile skates and that in itself is a whole diffrent ballpark. I also use all the tools for the sharpner and I use th ME edge balancer.

I do my own. I'd like to think that we're the best in town, but we haven't got much competition, so there's not much to compare against, so best in town might not mean much. We use a Dupliskate machine, but we've had to teach ourselves, as there's not much by way of training out here in New Zealand. I'm going over to Vegas for the expo though, so if anyone can suggest a place to get a few tips it would be much appreciated!

Arwe there certain machines that sharpen better. Some stores here in Dallas have machines like JR, but afew have ones that are just a vice one a hinge that goes back and forward.
