How To: Dye Your Holders

Recommended Posts

Yes, you need to dye the holders for an extended period of time. I left mine in for 4 hours and i feel that it was just enough black. They could be blacker but for how they look on the ice it doesn't kill me. Glad to see all these great skate set ups. The lime green would have been better if maybe left in longer or maybe mixed with yellow?

I'm happy with the green. I'm not mounting them, just wanted to try a funky color. As for the black, they couldn't have come out any better. Only Wesley Snipes is darker than my holders.

So I dunked my holders in 2 packets of black Rit Sunday night. After 24 hours, I pulled them out and dried them and they're black but with a purple-ish tinge. I added another black and a dark brown packet last night to try to null out the purple effect but didn't see much change this morning.

WhiskyTango19, how did you get yours Snipes-black?

I noticed mine looked a bit purple, but when I took them outside when they were dry, they were jet black under sunlight. For some reason, they look purple at first. Make sure you rinse them off REALLY well, then wipe them dry.

I'm bored and I'm thinking about dyeing my Cobra 3000's black.

Early on in this thread it was mentioned that this is one of the softer holders out there and the dye would weaken it further. I haven't seen any follow-ups, though.

To anyone who has dyed Cobras, how are they holding up?

Can I expect a noticeable difference after dyeing?

If I wreck the Cobras, are there any other holders that line up should I have to replace (4 holes on the front, 4 on the back)?

Should I just leave them alone?

i know this thread's old, but im bored at work.

My cobra 3000's have held up just fine skating on them from 3-4 days a week.

i dyed mine in the summer of 08 and now its going into 2010 so i'd say they held up just fine.

Yeah, it's been 3-4 months now and I haven't noticed any performance issues. My only complaint is that it seems I'm touching them up every other game. I keep a black marker nearby and spot-fix when I'm packing my bag. It's not a huge deal, but I think next time I'll just leave the holders alone.

i don't even bother touching them up. i have cuts all threw my holders and you can see white in small spots. no biggie though, still love the black on black B)

How hard do you guys get beaked, if at all, for the dyed holders? There has to be some stories out there.

I've had black holders on my One95's for about a year and a half. I have gotten a couple comments about them looking good but that is about it. Never been chirped for it.

I had red tuuks on my ccm reloaded pros. Chirps I get are only from my little brother, standing 6'1 210 with experience, I don't hear it up front, but I'm sure I'm chirped behind my back. Holders look good, but when they start to chip, the hype starts to fade, literally. :)

there's a guy in my league who plays on an orange team and got the dyed tuuks from Total Hockey. he's a horrible player and just ends up looking like a big pylon.

haha, that's funny.

I never got chirped at for mine, If anything I got compliments. They were also flat black though. I would never dye mine any crazy color. I enjoy equipment that looks non-flashy and all black.

I just tried dying a old pair of white Oakley Gascan sunglasses I had laying around.. Used one package of Black Rit Dye and the damn things came out purple. Not sure if i should try dying them again or if this is as dark as there gonna get.. They look a lot better then when they were white but now its a dark maroonish purple color.

I wonder if having a constant heat source like keeping the pot with dye in it on the burner while dying the item allows the dye to seep in better. I boiled what and brought it outside where i then dumped it into a plastic bucket. Obviously the water doesnt hold the heat as long once its removed from the heat source. I left the glasses in the dye for about 3 hours.

If you want them jet black, leave them in overnight. The constant heat source wouldn't be that good for the plastic, I imagine.

By the way thanks to everyone that gave helpful tips and suggestions in this thread. Really wanted the black holders without messing my skates up at all and this thread and the links to Elax helped alot.

That being said my LHS was charging me 35 bucks to have my holders taken off and re-riveted on after i dyed them and they charged 65 for new holders and if I bought them from the store they would rivet them on for free so i just got the new holders dyed them and got them riveted on. Works great and the skates look tits imo.

I did black on my mission xp's and i blacked out all of the colors that stuck out. like the green logo, put red laces first then went black looked awesome got many complements but a P.I.A when it chips always have to touch it up. taking out the rivets was easy. For the heel I used a drill and for the toe rivets I used a chisel and a hammer and just hammered away. My shop charged 25 to re-rivet both skates =)

this is how they came out.
