Clicking when walking in boot

Recommended Posts

So I've recently become infatuated with ice hockey again, after a couple of years of not playing (or even thinking about it much). When I did play I didn't know much about maintaining my skates (Hell, I'm a Size 10 US and wearing a 10D skate... didn't realize they were way too big for my feet until recently) or much of my equipment at all, it's only recently that I've decided to become more educated about equipment and skates that I've noticed these small things that probably didn't help me very much a couple of years ago.

Onto the subject, I was onto the ice and I could hear a clicking noise. Something has come loose. I think it is the rivets but I'm not sure. I can see a gap between the holder and the bottom of the boot, which I can assume is bad! I'm in need of new skates anyway, the skates I have are old Koho skates but it would be nice for these to last at least until Christmas, since my girlfriend is excited that she finally knows what to buy me for Christmas this year and it will be something I really, really want.

What is involved in solving this rivet issue?

Couple of random shots of my old boys:

The screws holding your runner to the holder are loose.

Exactly. If you want a quick fix, just given them a quick tighten. Not too tight, no yanking out the 1/2 drive ratchet. Just firm with a socket driver.

If you want some extra assurance that they won't come loose again, back the screws right out, clean the threads with a small wire brush and put a drop of blue locktight on each screw and re-assemble.

Bingo.

Either that or one of the rivets is loose between boot and frame. My Vapor XX's make a similar sound atm and thats what their issue is.

Having skated on SLM holders starting in 1977, moving on to Perfectas, Prolites, Excaliburs, and finally E-Pro's, I will guarantee you that the screws holding the runner to the holder are loose.
