Hockey shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

I'm starting hockey again after injuring my back, i'm looking for shoulder pads that have lots of protection around the spine and lower back, any suggestions?

I use last year's 6k's, and have found them very good for spine protection...but they aren't very long on my back, but I have a long torso compared to some of my friends, if I were you I'd try them on.

Most of the higher end easton and rbk pants have good lower back protection, and from the looks of it the S15's back protection goes up pretty high.

Newer Bauer's come up pretty high as well. The Supreme line in particular. I went with Supreme 50's only because I play in a league with very little contact but I tried One90's and they were pretty nice in that respect. They came up pretty high in the back and are adjustable with the spine pad. They were nicely padded in the front as well.

i've played with a couple of guys who had back problems and they wore extra padding over the spine. what they had was a slim back pack that was about 12" wide and ran from shoulders to the waist. it was also about 3" thick.

Douglas Makes/made a lower back extension that attached to their Defender pads from the 90's. They could easily be attached to other brands of pads. May be tough to find.

I used to use the Douglas pads and the back plate and they were very protective. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are out of the hockey business.

I have One90's and they have great protection and great mobility. I don't know how Easton's are but I always see their huge Spine Protector so possibly good protection going on there.

I don't believe they have made hockey pads for a number of years, but that doesn't mean the football pad extension isn't available....

Douglas pad extension

That's a youth, but I'm sure if you look around they are readily available.

Any high end pant will give you good spine protection. Nike/Bauer One/70/90's, RBK 7, 8 ,9K's, Easton S17,S9 ,S7, Tackla 951's, 5000's 9000's, Graf 500's700's , or Itech 6600's just to name a few. As long as their sized properly you'll get very good spine ad back protection. High end pants may be overkill for the hockey you play but believe me it's worth the cash for the extra protection they give you. Ive played recreational semi contact hockey for many years and all my equipment is overkill for that type of hockey( everything I wear is Pro quality) but I've always been able to get up for work the following morning. In my opinion stick to a high end pant and don't take any chances with cheaper middle of the line or lower end ones.

As far as good shoulder pads are concerned I've found nothing better on the market than Jofa/RBK. They are without a doubt the best on the market. They are recommended by a majority of the NHL equipment managers for the pros which is a good enough sell for me. I would go for the 6K or the higher up 7,8,or 9K's. Even if they feel a bit bulky you'll be hard pressed to find anything else on the market that absorbs shocks or protects as well as these shoulder pads. Hope I've helped.

douglas also makes one that includes rib pads aswell. as far as douglas getting out of hockey that would be correct they stopped making hockey pads a while ago.

WSI also makes padded undershirts in different models and they've been really helpful in the past about making custom padded shirts for guys with injury issues.
