HELP w/ Hockey Helmet for Newbie

Recommended Posts

My 8 yr old son will be playing competitive hockey this fall/winter for the first time. I need some direction on helmets. We bought a CCM 592 that seemed to fit in the store, but it's too snug on the sides, and loose in the front and back. The circumference of his head is more of a round shape than the oval shape created by the padding in the CCM helmet.

Can anyone recommend a manufacturer who's helmets fit well on round heads as opposed to oval shaped heads? I know of Mission, Nike/Bauer, Easton, etc., but none of the websites I've checked address my question.

Thanks in advance for the help.

has the helmet been already adjusted to fit front and back? it may need readjusting.

Yes, it has. It can't go any smaller front to back, and it is pretty tight on the sides. I shaved out some of the padding on the sides, but it's still tight.

Play around with sizing. Going to a wider size but collapsing the front-back adjustment might be an option.

The best bet for skates and helmets is to go to a store (or 2 or 3) and try on everything you can. Don't try to save money by buying online if you're just going to end up with an ill-fitting product.

if your looking for a cheap and really good helmet, buy the nikebauer 4500. It is not expensive as the other helmets and has protection but if you are looking for a good helmet with lots of protection but not looks, go for the Cascade helmet

4500 is much more narrow, terrible choice.

The old school foam can make for a tight fit around the temples and over the ears even though the helmet is more "round." I'd look into a CCM V08 helmet if possible..They're affordable and protective..plus they're also roundish inside. I've got a CCM 452 that is great, but the foam is a bit thick on the sides and can create pressure.
