No Maple Leaf at 2010 Olypmics

Recommended Posts

Weird rule, I had never heard of it until I saw the article. Bring back the 72 series jersey, also I had noticed in the River City Sports merchandise mag that they had released some maroon colored merchandise with the logo ala Canada Cup for Hockey Canada.

I would hope that the request for expemption would read something like:

"Dear IOC,

The enclosed coupon entitles you to one nice big cup of go f*ck youself.

Sincerely,

Hockey Canada."

They really must have WAAAAAAY too much time on their hands.

Does anyone know what the IOC's reasoning is? Why do they care what a teams uniform looks like? This seems like bureaucracy at its finest. Some idiots with nothing better to do than come up with stupid pointless rules that don't make sense.

As I read it the only problem is using the hockey canada maple leaf with the player in it. I don't see a problem with just having a plain maple leaf as it is a national symbol and not a corporate one. If that's the case, it's much ado about nothing.

True, but they keep saying no maple leaf in the stories that I've read. It's a little confusing. I'm definitely not attached to the player inside the maple leaf. If they can go with just a solid maple leaf or something along the lines of what they wore in '72 or '76 I have no complaints.

If the issue is that the crest is registered as a corporate logo, Hockey Canada could "sell" the logo before the Olympics and "buy" it back afterwards - I think $1.00 changing hands makes it a legal transaction in Canada.

Im confused.... they cant use the logo because it is also their logo for "Hockey Canada," correct? But isnt team USA's logo also the same logo as their "USA Hockey"? Its pretty late... maybe im lost?

The "USA" part in "USA Hockey" matches the logo that the USA uses for the Olympics. Maybe they made the argument that since it doesn't have the "hockey" in it, that it's a different logo? You can see it clearly on USA Hockey's web page.

The way I understood it was that they just don't want Canada using the same logo as Hockey Canada or w/e. I think it'd be stupid if they make them get rid of the Maple Leaf entirely.

Hockey canada can still have some great looking jerseys. No one is making canada enter the olympics anyways. They can leave their hockey team at home if they don't want to follow the rules.

It might have been easier to comply with the rules in the first place so they wouldn't have to go complain about it now!

Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson. "They're putting Team Canada at a disadvantage in its own country."

Overdramatize much?

Taking the "you play for the logo on the front..." thing a little too seriously.

They should just keep the curent jerseys and put the Canada writing you find at the bottom of the current logo in a downwards position (ala pre-lockout NHL Shield).

Im sure the Vancouver 2010 olympics would be over-joyed with a no show by the Canadian hockey teams

Just so you know, since you obvisouly dont seem to be fully aware of the situation, the IOC applied this rule before, it has been existing for a long time.

They started to apply it in Beijing this summer.

Whatever logo we use, were still gonna bring back gold ;)

Team Canada should wear the same jersey that eh Jr's are wearing in their pre-tourney game tonight...not an exact replica of the 1972 jersey...but a nice updated version of it.

I completely agree with you, the alternate jersey is very nice. The only modification that must be done to the alternate jersey though, is the removal of the "Team Canada" shoulder patches.

Ok heres what happened. In the fifties, major league baseball commissioned a logo. blue on one side, red on the other, with a white silhouette of a batter. Since then everyone feels like they HAVE to do some sort of interpretation of this. THe NBA and WNBA, the AHL, Hockey Canada, and countless others. Let's be honest. The Black/Red/White silhouette of a hockey player looks stupid, and a blatant ripoff of the "formula." Be thankful you don't have to wear it, and will probably wear a better looking maple leaf than one cut in half by hockey's version of Jerry West.

For the record the USA logo wit the "stripes" as an S looks terrible too. USA in Block letters in a tasteful update on the Miracle on ice jerseys, and our set to go. And canada should't wear black at all. Last I checked, the canadian flag doesnt have black on it. You don't see the swedes throwing green on their jerseys, they use blue and yellow, because their flag is blue and yellow.

Sending a team to the olympics should represent your country, not try and develop a "brand identity" for youth programs.

I think you'll find plenty of people who think very highly of both logos.

Personally i love the U.S.A logo they use now. And being that i am an American i never payed attention really to the colors of the team Canada jerseys vs. the flag but why does it have black in it? And is that typical of other olympic teams for Canada?

I don't know that the choice of black in the logo/jersey has ever really been explained...probably for no other reason than contrast/design. But, it's better than when they have BLUE in the logo...No offense to our US friends...but Canada wearing Red, White & Blue seems very very wrong to me.
