Looking for some answers/recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've done a little searching around but most threads are a little outdated that came up in the search. Í am in need of new hockey pants. I have NBH XV Lite in a senior small that are too small and not near protective enough. I am playing Midget AAA hockey and have already gotten some nice bumps on my hips that have made walking around a hard thing to do. I have heard great things about Tacklas but my lhs does not carry any, and I would like to support them, however they will order me any pants that I want if they have an account with that company. So, can anyone recommend a pant that is more protective than my current XV's, but mobile. Thanks!

Almost anything. The NBH pants have virtually no hip protection, mainly the front of the hip. I think the Supreme 8000s were better but even the pro pants give up that padding for mobility.

Tackla is great, CCM is great. Almost everything is going to be more bulky but they shouldn't hurt your mobility much, if at all.

im a big fan of the newer CCM vector pants...the v08 and the v10 pants are a whole lot of pant for the money and fir much more streamlined than the older tacks models. good padding and good features have me leaning towards them as my best recommendation (altough if you can get your hands on some HP520's those are THE best pants around)

As already mentioned the CCM Vector 08 is a very good and protective pant. I would also look at the Easton line the S17 or S-9 ( high end professional) and the S-7 or S-5 ( second down the line) are very protective as well. If you can get your hands on some Tacklas go with the 5000 or 9000 both are fantastic for fit and protection but you may need a bit of time to get use to the European fit. The Tackla 951 is also a great pant but I don't know if it will offer the protection you are looking for at your hockey level. Also have a look at the RBK 6K or 7k which also offer great protection.

Thanks for suggestions, I was looking at some CCM smu pant that they have at my lhs called the vector vibe (similar to vo4) but I found it fit really short , and I hate when pants are too short. Anyone have any info on the v10 pant in regards to length, is it a short pant, or average length? Anybody know about weight as well?

If you can lay hands on the itech hp8000 pro, they have great hip protection, great all round protection, and I'm a big guy who falls a lot, so needs protection.

I went from crappy bauers to these, and I hope they last forever

What is with all of the Tackla models? What models are good for protection and which are good for comfort? They have a huge range of models, all which seem to have the same description. This is one of my pet peeves with the hockey equipment industry. Each year every manufacturer comes out with a new set of numbers, and every few years they change numbering systems. Therefore, it is very difficult to tell what models are top of the line, what models were top of the line in years past, and what you are getting for your money. It is impossible for the LHS to stock all of the models in all of the manufacturers, so how do you really know what you are getting. Our LHS seems to stock mostly price point models, and then throws in a couple of high end pieces of gear. Our LHS does not stock Tacklas, so I am a bit lost. Right now I am looking at Tackla pants and have found the following models.

951

9000

Pro 8800

55

EX-PP55

2440

5000

1440

2500

8000

Prolight 1400

Silver 44

Silver 55

880 Women's

800

3100 Womens

HP 3500

HP 5000

400

HP 1000

Pro 1000

Silver 33

Which of these are top of the line models, as they seem to run the gamut as far as year of manufacture.

These are for my daughter. She is rather tall and thin. She has a 28" waist and is 5'5". I have decided to go with the Tacklas for her based on a recommendation from JR that they have longer length pants in the same waist size. She currently is in a RBK 5K pant size XL, but they are too short. If I move into the adult sizes of other pants, she cannot cinch them up properly. Thus the quest to find the Tacklas.

What size waist are you?

Change her diet. Twinkie salads and donuts instead of bread will fix that ;)

If you really need Tacklas you might need to blindly buy online and make use of a generous return policy. Icewarehouse would only have you out return shipping if you qualify for free during the order. Either that or make a trip to a less-than-local HS that has more stock.

Tackla is a great choice. The only issue is that she is in the "tweener" stage, that is, between junior and senior waist sizes...which kinda sucks when shopping. thehockeyshop.com always carries the +2 pant length in stock (black) but they start at a 48 waist which would be 31". The smallest I have seen is a 46 senior which would be a 30" waist. So at 28, she would qualify as a junior size (160 I believe). Finding a 160 +2 will be very tough, so talking to JR would be your best bet on finding that size.

JR do you happen to know if the 170 and 180 sizes in the junior sizes of Tackla are these long cuts that you speak of? They are listed for the same waist sizes as the 160, but for taller players. Or, are there specific versions that are made in the long cut? I guess I am being confused by the European sizing.

Try hockey1 - they used to sell the tall cut and husky cuts for kids back in the day.

Been a while since I've looked at it, but it is usually the sizes at the end of the junior spectrum. They are made tall for taller kids/skinny adults.

Thanks JR. That's what I thought. It seems to be the 160 is the Large size for juniors, and then the 170 and 180 are the same waist size with a +1" or +2" for the taller kids. I have found several pants that are available in the 170 and 180 sizes, but I guess I need to know which are considered good pants. After looking around on this site, it seems that the Silver pants are their value line, so I am staying away from them. I have found the following pants all in the same price range, but I need to know which of them are good pants. Color is not an issue, since her team wears shells. Which of these pants is the best pant, if they are all the same price:

EXP-44

Pro 1000

HP 1000

HP 5000

I have also found pairs of M1 and L5 Missions in XL junior sizes. Do you think either of those might be an option since they are a two piece pant? If so, how do they stack up against the Tacklas that I listed?

I had the same problem with my daughter. She grew out of Tackla's because of leg length. She's 5'3" has long legs, so when we found a length that worked the waist was too big. She plays Tier1, so we wanted a protective pant. She has been using the Nike Bauer supreme 70's that are designed for women (longer in the inseam). She wears a small. With your daughters height maybe go with a medium.

With more girls/women playing it would be nice to see more companies design equipment for them.

I wear CCM Pro Tacks and found that they fit me better than any other pant i've owned (Tackla 5000, Mission M-1, Bauer 6000). But my body is definately different than yours (i'm 5'10", 174 lbs.).
