Why does hockey have such lame nicknames?

Recommended Posts

Hockey's not all about individuals-that's why our game is better than any other. There's no need for any 'ocho-cincos' in our game.

I never said anything about any self serving nicknames or loudmouths in the media. A little creativity in the locker room won't kill a hockey player.

Hockey has plenty of nicknames other than they "ie" or "er" attached to a name. They just aren't self promoting buffoons who market them for their own benefit.

I get 'Mattie' a lot. Or 'Baz' (shortened last name)...but to show how comfortable people get with names....after hockey last week we were at the bar...and one of the guys I play with introduces me to a friend of his

"This is Mattie..."

Bar was kinda loud...she looks at me and goes "Maddie???"

I go "No, Matt...they just call me Mattie"

All you do is shorten the last name a little and add an "s" or an "er".

Compared to what? The most common nickname in the NBA or NFL right now is to just take a guy's initials/number, i.e. LT (which is stolen from the original LT). As far as baseball, I can't even really think of any current stars that have a nickname besides guys like A-Rod or Big Papi (which is a cool nickname I think just because I love how announcers actually refer to him as 'Papi'.

Stu "Grim Reeper" Grimson

Nikolai "The Bulin Wall" Khabibulin (sp?)

Mark "Moose" Messier...

Hedberg in Atlanta is also called Moose because of an amazing playoff run when the Moose were still an IHL team (I think).

Evgeni "Gino" Malkin

Patrick "St. Patrick" Roy

I don't mind the typical hockey nicknames. ( ie etc )

That being said, there have been, and continue to be, some cool nicknames in hockey.

"The Stratford Streak" Howie Morenz

"Le Gros Bill" Jean Beliveau

Jiggy, The Dominator, The Mule

two of my personal favorites

"little ball of hate" - Pat Verbeek and "The Russian Rocket" pavel bure

I'm pretty sure Hedberg Nickname came back from when played for Pittsburgh... he first stood out in the playoffs not sure how the moose came to be

"Hedberg started a game in Pittsburgh on late notice and as a result was still wearing his customized Manitoba Moose helmet which, not surprisingly, had a large moose painted across it."

thats what wiki said which is how i recall it happening as well.

although i agree with you, you are forgetting the NHL's own Fashionista, Sean Avery :P
